Job description

Assistant Research Professor of Pediatrics

Specific Title Appointment Type Scientist Track Faculty Department IUSM - Pediatrics Campus IU School of Medicine Indianapolis Position Summary

The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 300 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness. With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

The Felton Lab’s current work builds on evidence that autoreactive B cell development and function are altered during T1D progression and that B cells exhibit distinct metabolic phenotypes in autoimmune disease. The lab also investigates immunomodulatory approaches and mechanisms, including type I interferon signaling, and integrates mechanistic research with efforts to understand T1D progression and risk.

The Assistant Research Professor will serve as a senior scientific member of the Felton lab, supporting and advancing a translational research program focused on the immunologic and metabolic mechanisms underlying type 1 diabetes. The position will have particular responsibility for developing and executing studies examining B cell tolerance, immune cell metabolism, type I interferon signaling, and interactions between immune cells and the pancreatic islet microenvironment.

Working closely with the PI, the Assistant Research Professor will provide intellectual and technical leadership for ongoing and emerging projects, including the design and execution of experiments, interpretation and integration of complex datasets, development of new experimental approaches, and preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and grant applications. The individual will be expected to exercise substantial scientific independence while contributing to the laboratory’s broader research strategy.

The position will also provide day-to-day scientific leadership within the laboratory, including mentoring trainees and research staff, troubleshooting experimental approaches, establishing rigorous and reproducible laboratory practices, and coordinating projects and collaborations. The Assistant Research Professor may lead defined research projects and develop complementary areas of investigation that strengthen the laboratory’s overall research portfolio. This position and scientific environment is particularly suited for an applicant with expertise in immunology, B cell biology, or autoimmunity.

IUSM is committed to being a welcoming campus community and we seek candidates whose research, teaching, and community engagement efforts contribute to robust learning and working environments for all students, staff, and faculty. We invite individuals who will join us in our mission to improve health equity and well‑being for all throughout the state of Indiana.

Basic Qualifications
