Summary

The Durham VA Healthcare System is seeking (1) highly skilled/experienced Assistant Registered Nurse Manager to serve within Specialty Surgery. Demonstrates leadership - experience/ingenious approaches to management of complex patient care. Accountable for the management of patient care - human - fiscal/material resources - & the total environment of the unit. Responsible to ensure that the highest possible quality of care is achieved & a safe therapeutic environment.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• English Language Proficiency
• In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
• Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
• OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program
• Upon achievement of a State license - the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program

• OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing - possession of a current - full - active - and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program
• Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD)
• Current - full - active - and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State - Territory or Commonwealth (i.e. - Puerto Rico) of the United States - or the District of Columbia
• Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements - but do not possess the required licensure - may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.) Duties

• The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) for the Surgery Specialty Clinic supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing daily clinical operations across multiple surgical subspecialties such as Urology - Pain - ENT - Neurosurgery - Orthopedics / General Surgery / Cardiac / Thoracic
• Responsibility includes management - evaluation - and implementation of evidenced-based nursing practice
• The ANM is responsible for executing his/her duties in a manner that demonstrates leadership - clinical expertise - and creative approaches to the management of patient care for adult and geriatric patients - in accordance with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act - Medical Center - and VAHQ standards of Practice
• The ANM and the Nurse Manager are a high functioning team - working cohesively to create a positive work environment which enhances care delivered by nursing and other allied health care staff within the VA Durham Healthcare system
• The ANM will make sound fiscal decisions when requesting supplies and managing time and leave of employees with the guidance of the Nurse Manager
• approving time off - and authorizing overtime in compliance with unit and hospital financial goals
• The Assistant Nurse Manager is also responsible for coaching - mentoring - and supervising subordinate staff
• The ANM will work collaboratively with the Team to ensure that all administrative functions are adequately covered
• The assistant Nurse Manager reports to the Nurse Manager of the designated unit assigned
• Duties include - but not limited to: Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates - setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work
• Assigning work to subordinates (RNs - LPNs - NAs) based on priorities - selective consideration of difficulty and the requirements of the assignments - and the capabilities of subordinates
• Evaluating the performance of team
• Giving advice - counsel - or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters
• Mediating and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors
• Recommending disciplinary action where appropriate
• Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training (VA Handbook 5007 - Part III - Chapter 8)
• Maintain competency/proficiency in practice on their assigned unit and remain current with required certification for their unit - i.e. - basic life support (BLS) and/or advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)
• Monitor attendance of team with the guidance of nurse manager
• Assumes role in coverage/ staffing a minimum of 50% of the time
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with patients - families and other members of an interdisciplinary team
• Prior recent experience in ambulatory care/primary care nursing - including care of patients with mental health - female Veterans - and health education needs
• Prior recent experience in ambulatory care/primary care nursing - including care of patients with mental health - female Veterans - and health education needs
• Demonstrated history of collaborative relationships with inter-professional staff and other support services and organizational leadership
