Job summary

LM Manufacturing seeks a dedicated professional to assist the Quality Manager in directing daily Quality department operations at our Detroit plant. You will lead Quality Engineers, Liaisons and Technicians, ensuring customer needs are met and KPIs improve.

Key responsibilities include championing the IATF 16949 quality system, developing and maintaining quality policies, and coordinating internal audits and training. A strong leader with excellent communication is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
  • 3+ years of progressive quality experience in a JIT Automotive manufacturing environment.
  • Prior lead or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Quality Manager in directing daily Quality dept operations.
  • Provide leadership to Quality Engineers, Liaisons, and Technicians.
  • Communicate customer needs to LM Manufacturing personnel in a timely manner.
  • Monitor and support KPI improvement efforts in the department.
  • Champion LM Manufacturing's Quality Management System for IATF 16949 compliance.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain quality policies and procedures.
  • Maintain systems to track quality performance (containment, audits, corrective actions).
  • Support quality reporting on customer performance, production quality, and supplier quality.
  • Support APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, and control plan activities across programs.
  • Coordinate internal audit activities per the audit program.
  • Ensure training for all department employees in a timely manner.
  • Support performance reviews for department staff.
  • Ensure compliance with Company policies, safety rules, and standards.
  • Collaborate on disciplinary actions with HR as needed.
  • Promote Employee Charter and company goals; communicate positively.
  • Support and manage relations with the union under the UAW contract.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and adherence to safety policies.

Job description

Assists the Quality Manager in directing the daily operations of the Quality department. Supports the leadership of the quality team by helping implement quality management objectives, policies, and procedures to ensure key objectives are met. Helps ensure that organizational quality objectives are successfully achieved, and supports the Quality Manager, Assistant General Manager, and General Manager in maintaining a plant-wide commitment that the highest quality product possible is manufactured. The Assistant Quality Manager is expected to inspire and lead their teams by setting the example and driving the 5C’s (Care, Commit, Connect, Communicate & Celebrate)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists the Quality Manager in managing the daily operations and activities of the Quality department.
  • Provides leadership and daily direction to Quality Engineers, Quality Liaisons, and Quality Technicians in the absence of, or as assigned by, the Quality Manager.
  • Ensures the needs of the Customers are clearly and timely communicated to appropriate personnel at LM Manufacturing.
  • Monitors and supports efforts to improve department KPIs.
  • Supports the Quality Manager in championing LM Manufacturing's Quality Management System for IATF 16949 compliance.
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining effective quality policies and procedures.
  • Ensures systems are in place and maintained to track quality performance (containment activities, layered process audits, corrective actions, etc.).
  • Supports timely and accurate quality reporting on customer performance, production quality, and supplier quality.
  • Supports APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, and control plan activities across assigned programs.
  • Coordinates and supports internal audit activities in accordance with the internal audit program.
  • Ensures all employees within the department (new and transferred) receive required training in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the thorough and timely completion of scheduled performance reviews for department employees.
  • Ensures all Company policies, procedures, plant standards, and safety rules are consistently adhered to.
  • Collaborates with the Quality Manager and Human Resources Manager in the administration of disciplinary action, when necessary.
  • Supports and enforces the principles of the Employee Charter, Company goals and objectives, and decisions and policies by taking ownership and communicating these in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Supports open and honest dialogue with the union in administering the UAW contract.
  • Displays a positive attitude towards safety, works safely, and follows all the Company's safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all Health, Safety and Environmental standards in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Michigan Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Assists in ensuring all employees and visitors have a safe environment by maintaining safety and housekeeping standards, and ensuring hazards, unsafe actions, or unsafe conditions are identified, corrected, and/or eliminated.
  • Responds to and investigates reports of injuries, accidents, illnesses, near misses, and property damage immediately.
  • Takes an active part in the division's safety program by performing regular workplace inspections, assisting in accident/incident investigations, and supporting the division's safety goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education/Certification/Licensure: Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of progressive quality experience in a JIT Automotive manufacturing environment, including prior lead or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Demonstrates strong leadership skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and present information to customers, suppliers, vendors, management, employees, and corporate personnel. Strong analytical, problem resolution, and project management skills. Working knowledge of Quality Systems (i.e., QOS, PFMEAs, Control Plans, Statistics, APQP, PPAP). Strong organizational skills, and the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and priorities within and across departments/business units to meet established and changing deadlines.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Work performed in office and manufacturing plant environments. Normal mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct a normal amount of work at a computer. Frequently exposed to varying temperatures within the plant depending upon external weather conditions. Frequently walks, stands, grips/grasps, bends/stoops, crouches; and lifts and carries up to thirty (30) lbs. Occasionally may lift and carry up to fifty (50) lbs.
