Job summary

The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (MOPD) seeks experienced Assistant Public Defenders for the Anne Arundel County district courts. The role emphasizes zealous representation, team collaboration with social workers and investigators, and addressing systemic inequities in the criminal justice process.

Positions are in Glen Burnie and Annapolis; candidates may rotate between courts. Applicants may have taken the July Maryland Bar and are pending results.

Qualifications

• Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state.
• Experience in trial litigation and appellate preparation.
• Ability to manage complex district court caseloads with teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Passionate and zealous representation of clients at every stage of the criminal process.
• Ensure clients are consistently heard and respected.
• Conduct legal research and analysis for trial preparation and to anticipate legal issues.
• Effectively communicate with clients, teammates, and service providers to optimize outcomes.
• Counsels and advises clients on changes in law, and on legal issues.
• Negotiate with prosecutors to resolve cases favorably for the client.
• Resourcefully manage a full caseload and pursue ongoing professional development.
