Job summary

State of Florida seeks an Assistant Public Defender for the 8th Circuit, serving Gainesville, Bronson, or Starke. The attorney represents clients charged with criminal offenses who cannot afford counsel, in a high-volume defense role within the Public Defender’s Office.

Opening Date: Immediate; Closing Date: Until filled. Requires Florida Bar membership and strong advocacy skills; travel within the circuit may be required. Competitive salary and excellent benefits are provided.

Qualifications

  • Must be in good standing with the Florida Bar.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Good technology skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish helpful but not required.
  • Jury trial experience preferred.
  • Participation in a law school trial advocacy course or litigation skills program preferred.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License, proof of automobile insurance, and reliable vehicle; or alternate means of reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Zealously advocate for each client through case analysis, motions, and jury trials.
  • Prepare each case efficiently using office and community resources.
  • Manage a high-volume caseload with clear client communication and attention to individuals.
  • Advise and counsel clients to achieve the best possible result in their case.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with clients and the legal community.
  • Utilize holistic defense strategies to achieve the best outcomes for clients.
