The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing high‑quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous material pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP’s water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes throughout a 2,000‑square‑mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.
The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) manages a capital program valued at $35 B, with an additional $13.6 B projected over the next ten years. This program supports the upgrading and maintenance of critical infrastructure, including dams, bridges, aqueducts, wastewater treatment plants, and related facilities within the watershed.
We are looking for a Civil Engineering Intern to serve as an Assistant Project Manager for the Water System Capital Program directorate. The intern will work under an Accountable Manager, assisting in supervising water and wastewater projects, planning and coordinating design and construction, ensuring compliance with permit requirements, conducting field surveys, reviewing contract documents, and performing construction inspections. The role also includes attending required environmental compliance and safety training, and may require extended workdays and fieldwork in varied weather conditions.
