Job summary

FCL Builders, LLC is seeking an Assistant Estimator in Houston, TX to support the Pre-Construction team with developing accurate project costs, reviewing plans, coordinating with subcontractors, and preparing competitive bids. This entry-level role offers a clear path toward estimator and project-management roles.

You'll gain hands-on experience reading drawings, performing takeoffs, and contributing to bid summaries while working in a collaborative environment with mentorship and growth

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field or equivalent education/experience.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in Excel; familiarity with Bluebeam or takeoff software is a plus.
• Internship or entry-level experience in construction estimating or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing construction estimates from conceptual designs through detailed plans and specs.
• Perform quantity takeoffs using Bluebeam or other takeoff software.
• Solicit and compare subcontractor and vendor proposals.
• Prepare bid summaries, scope sheets, and cost breakdowns.
• Review drawings to identify scope requirements, discrepancies, and risks.
• Support RFIs and value engineering ideas during pre-construction.
• Maintain historical cost data, bid records, and subcontractor information.
• Collaborate with estimators, project teams, architects, and BD during Pre-Construction.

What You’ll Do:

• Assist in developing construction estimates from conceptual designs through detailed plans and specifications.
• Perform quantity takeoffs using Bluebeam or other on-screen takeoff software.
• Solicit, organize, and compare subcontractor and vendor proposals.
• Help prepare bid summaries, scope sheets, cost breakdowns, and supporting documentation.
• Review drawings and specifications to identify scope requirements, discrepancies, and potential risks.
• Support the preparation of project RFIs and value engineering ideas.
• Maintain accurate historical cost data, bid records, and subcontractor information.
• Collaborate with Estimators, project teams, architects, consultants, and Business Development throughout the Pre-Construction process.
• Participate in site visits, pre-bid meetings, and bid reviews as needed.

What We’re Looking For:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
• Internship or entry-level experience in construction, estimating, engineering, or project management is preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, or a strong interest in developing this skill.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, analytical thinking, and follow-through.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with Bluebeam or on-screen takeoff software is a plus.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
• A proactive mindset and eagerness to learn from experienced estimating and operations professionals.
