Job summary

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking multiple Assistant Project Engineers to support highway design and construction across the Northwest Region. You will assist the Project Engineer to ensure projects meet standards while staying within scope, schedule, and budget.

You will lead engineering staff and consultants, manage projects under WSDOT policies, ensure environmental compliance, and coordinate with officials, contractors and the public to deliver safe,

Qualifications

• Professional Engineering Certification: Licensed as a Civil Professional Engineer in Washington or eligible to obtain licensure within six months.
• Civil engineering experience with highway design, construction, and PS&E.
• Experience leading transportation projects through planning, design, and construction.
• Ability to plan, organize, and deliver multiple projects on time and within budget.
• Working knowledge of programming and funding processes.
• Experience supervising engineering staff and fostering accountability.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Project Engineer in planning budgets, schedules, and workforce needs to deliver programs.
• Lead engineering staff, interns, and consultants in design and contract development.
• Manage projects to meet scope, schedule, and documentation requirements.
• Ensure compliance with environmental laws, standards, and policies.
• Collaborate with citizens, officials, contractors, and agencies to support efficient transportation delivery.
• Coordinate input and resolve project conflicts among teams and the public.
• Report project status to management to support informed decisions.
• Certify design documents and changes in the absence of the Project Engineer.
