Description:
The Department of Ophthalmology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for several Assistant Professor positions in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Applicants must have an M.D or M.D./Ph.D. degree. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent qualifications in education, research, and clinical care. Candidates must be ABO Certified or eligible. Both tenure and clinician-educator track faculty conduct research, with tenure track faculty focusing on independent research and clinician-educator track faculty focusing on collaboration.
Teaching responsibilities may include teaching medical students, residents, and fellows.
Clinical responsibilities may include patient care in the candidate's ophthalmic specialty.
Research responsibilities may include establishing basic, clinical, and/or translational research with potential for K12 funding.
The NIH K12 grant, awarded to Penn's Department of Ophthalmology, enables Scholars to dedicate 75% of their effort to research, providing mentoring and resources. The program aims to help Scholars transition to independent NIH K awards within three years and R01s within six years. The research focuses on mechanisms of ocular aging and cellular rejuvenation, among other areas. The program has been successful for over 17 years, supporting many faculty careers.
Candidates should be interested in becoming Scientist-Clinicians, planning to devote 75% or more of their time to research throughout their careers.
