Summary

Lynn University seeks an Assistant Professor of Technical Theater with a strong background as a performing arts technical director for the Drama Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. Applicants must have focus and the understanding of scenic design, set‑building, and theatrical production management procedures, and protocols. Bonus areas for the applicant in one or more of the following disciplines: lighting design, lighting consoles, and related software; experience with proper audio systems procedures, practices, and related software; All applicants should also have knowledge of theater rigging and standard practices.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as lead scenic designer and set builder for all Lynn drama productions and as undergraduate faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences teaching courses.
  • Serve as technical director for Drama program productions.
  • Supervise student workers during Drama program productions.
  • Serve as a recruitment ambassador for the drama department.
  • Participate in recruitment activities such as phone and email communications, open houses, high‑school visits, and virtual and in‑person auditions.
  • Travel to recruitment conferences throughout the United States.
  • Mentor students majoring in drama and provide academic and career advice.
  • Guide students in their artistic and professional development.
  • Assist with departmental tasks including production planning, curriculum development and assessment.
  • Attend department, college, and university meetings.
  • Coordinate with Director and Artistic staff regarding practicalities of productions and scheduling of venues.
  • Conduct production meetings with staff, student workers, and outside producers to determine task assignments.
  • Oversee maintenance of shop tools/equipment; monitor theater inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials; perform theater maintenance.
  • Work with Director and building Technical Director to develop and implement operational procedures and ensure compliance by staff.
  • Ensure personnel perform tasks in compliance with departmental safety standards.
  • Perform administrative office tasks as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum qualification: MFA in Technical Theater (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Professional experience as a technical director.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in scenic design, set‑building, and theatrical production management procedures, and protocols.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following disciplines: lighting design, lighting consoles, and related software; experience with proper audio systems procedures, practices, and related software.
  • Knowledge of theater rigging and standard practices.
  • Proficiency with computers and software including Vectorworks Spotlight and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a multi‑task environment.
  • Ability to supervise staff and student workers and maintain positive interpersonal relations with faculty, staff, students, and clients.
  • Effective instructional methods.
  • Good judgment and effective oral and written communication.
  • Preferred: network of professional colleagues and connections.
  • Preferred: candidate is actively working in the industry.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to climb a ladder, operate aerial work platforms, and be comfortable working at height.
  • Ability to lift over 50lb and stand for long periods of time, occasionally work overhead.
