Assistant Professor, Special Education

Location: Richmond Campus

Job Summary

The School of Education at Eastern Kentucky University invites applications for a tenure‑track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for the academic year 2026-2027. The successful candidate will teach a full (4/4) course load in both traditional and online modalities, serve undergraduate and graduate special education majors, develop and maintain an active scholarly agenda, conduct academic advising, and participate in service to the school, college, university, and community. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in educational and assistive technologies that support learners with disabilities and a demonstrated commitment to responsible use of artificial intelligence in the discipline.

Responsibilities

• Teach a 4/4 load of undergraduate and graduate courses in early childhood special education, deaf and hard‑of‑hearing education, learning and behavior disabilities, and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
• Design and deliver instruction in both traditional and online modalities.
• Develop and pursue a scholarly agenda with publication and presentation goals.
• Provide faculty advising to students.
• Serve the school, college, and community through outreach and professional service.
• Participate in professional organizations and contribute to their activities.
• Demonstrate knowledge of or willingness to develop knowledge of artificial intelligence relevant to special education.

Minimum Qualifications

• Earned Ph.D. in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment; ABD candidates may be considered if the doctoral defense occurs no later than May prior to a Fall appointment.
• Three or more years of teaching experience in early childhood special education, deaf and hard‑of‑hearing education, learning or behavior disabilities, and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
• Knowledge of current practices in professional communication and social media.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Effective interpersonal communication and active listening skills.
• Analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Ability to collaborate with peers and students and adapt to current trends in professional communication.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching in a P‑12 school in the United States.
• Experience teaching at the college or university level.
• Evidence of professional contributions and activities.
• Experience teaching online courses and working with learning management systems.
