Qualifications

• Earned PhD in Sociology by May 2027.
• Ability to teach courses in classical and contemporary sociological theory.
• Interest in gender and sexuality studies, global sociology, or other listed fields is welcome.

Responsibilities

• Teach core sociology courses, including History of Social Thought and Sociological Imagination.
• Rotate teaching of department core courses and senior thesis capstone.
• Offer upper-level sociology electives in area of specialization.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Spelman Collegeseeks a tenure-track Assistant or tenured Associate Professor tobegin in August 2027 . The ideal candidate will bring astrong and complementary combination of theoretical,methodological, and substantive expertise. We welcome applicantswith a proven ability to teach courses in classical andcontemporary sociological theory, and with expertise in any of thefollowing areas: gender and sexuality studies, global andtransnational sociology, human rights, food studies, digitalsociology, technology and society, political sociology & socialmovements, economic sociology, environmental sociology,public/engaged sociology, demography, and community-based research.The department is particularly excited by candidates whosescholarship and teaching reflect a feminist methodological lens aswell as strong quantitative and computational expertise.Furthermore, candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment tosocial justice and anti-racism through their teaching and researchare particularly encouraged to apply.

This position carries a 3:2 teaching load. The department seeks ascholar who can rotate teaching core departmental courses, such asHistory of Social Thought, Contemporary Social Theory, Survey ofResearch Methods, Multivariate Analysis, Sociological Imagination,and the Senior Thesis capstone. The candidate must also be able tooffer upper-level Sociology elective courses in their area ofspecialization.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have an earned PhD in Sociology byMay 2027.
