Job Description

The Department of Urban Planning and Community Development (UPCD) in the School for the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB) seeks candidates for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin September 1, 2025. We invite scholars specializing in workforce development who incorporate environmental sustainability, equity, and community engagement frameworks in their scholarship, teaching, and service. We are especially interested in candidates whose planning scholarship and practice focus on:

  1. Transformations in urban and regional labor markets to expand workforce development, particularly in green and blue economic sectors, with a focus on underserved and economically distressed communities.
  2. Resident-led and community-based economic development initiatives, including small business incubators, cooperative businesses, micro-lending, and community development finance institutions.
  3. Partnerships between communities and universities that promote applied research in workforce and community development to create more job and economic opportunities for distressed communities.

SFE's mission is to examine and address challenges in the natural, built, and social environments through transdisciplinary and equity-informed approaches. We aim to expand environmental knowledge and develop innovative solutions to environmental and social problems locally and beyond. We value candidates experienced in community-based participatory research and transdisciplinary methodologies, who can collaborate within and contribute to the activities of our faculty.

The successful candidate will support undergraduate and graduate programs, establish an active research agenda, and seek external funding to promote job opportunities in underserved communities. Experience in building partnerships with local organizations for workforce development and creating internship and career pathways for students is highly desirable.

UMass Boston is a diverse urban research university committed to inclusion and equity. We welcome applicants who value diversity and can contribute to an inclusive academic environment.
