General Function

The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.

Description of Primary Duties

The successful candidate will teach a 15/15 credit hour teaching load based on student demand for fundamental physics courses. The successful candidate will also create curriculum for assigned courses, complete student learning assessment reports for each course taught, advise students, and liaise with per course and dual credit physics faculty. The successful candidate is also expected to complete university and community service activities.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook .

Additional Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Physics (or related field), or doctoral course work complete and dissertation in progress, or 30 semester hours of graduate credit in Physics in addition to the master’s degree and a minimum of three years of experience equivalent to academic service to Missouri State University-West Plains.

Candidates must have experience teaching first and second year college physics courses, including experience in setting up and conducting physics labs. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and effective oral and written communication skills; have experience with a wide-range of instructional delivery systems; be familiar with student learning assessment processes; and demonstrate involvement in professional organizations and activities.
