JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at The Pennsylvania State University seeks applications for an Assistant Professor of Forest Ecophysiology. This is a tenure-line position with a 60% research and 40% teaching appointment. The position comes with a competitive start-up package and salary based on 36-weeks of service annually, which can be supplemented with additional salary up to a total of 48 weeks from external funding.

The successful applicant is expected to develop an externally funded, high impact interdisciplinary research program on forest adaptation under global change. We seek candidates who will use creative, collaborative, and inclusive approaches to incorporate an understanding of ecophysiology and tree physiology to examine plant-soil-water interactions across scales of biodiversity to ultimately develop effective management strategies for forests under global change. Teaching responsibilities will include one graduate and one undergraduate course in tree ecophysiology and one additional course that aligns with the candidate’s expertise and department curricular needs.

Qualifications. Individuals must have a degree in forestry or related field (e.g. ecology, evolution, biology, natural resources management) with PhD degree requirements complete by the appointment date. Applicants should provide strong evidence for conducting and publishing innovative research, competitiveness for securing external research funding, excellence in communication with diverse interest groups, and potential for success in mentoring and advising students. The ideal candidate will work across scales of biodiversity, from genes to ecosystems. The geographical regions of interest are broad, including forest ecosystems from local to global scales. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the University is required. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with Penn State's Institute for Energy in the Environment through the Climate Consortium and the Water Initiative, the College of Agricultural Sciences Institute for Sustainable Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Science, the Center for Rhizosphere and Root Biology, and the Department’s Schatz Center for Tree Molecular Genetics.

Application. Interested individuals are invited to apply at REQ_0000061578 at https://hr.psu.edu/careers. Application materials should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, names and contact information for three references, three representative publications, statement of research experiences/future interests, statement of teaching pedagogy/interests, and a reflection of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging document. Applicants are also encouraged to weave evidence of their commitment to fostering inclusivity throughout their application material. Questions about the application process should be directed to Mary Jo Schillings at mjs9@psu.edu. Review of applications will begin January 6th, 2025.
