Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Data Science in the Department of Mathematics beginning on September 1, 2027.

Randolph-Macon’s new undergraduate Data Science program, housed in the Department of Mathematics, offers both a major and a minor built on foundational and elective coursework in mathematics, statistics, data science, computer science, biology, and ethics. We seek a dynamic candidate who can contribute broadly to the program through hands‑on, project-based teaching; curriculum development and interdisciplinary collaboration; and research, including undergraduate research, that engages students in applying core statistical and computational principles to complex, real‑world data problems.

Major/Essential Functions:

Randolph-Macon College faculty teach, advise, conduct research and engage in scholarship with undergraduate students, and serve the College and program. Primary teaching responsibilities include administering and creating courses in the Data Science program and contributing to the general education program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Data Science, or a closely related field with experience in data science, obtained by August 31, 2027.
  • Evidence of experience in teaching data science and statistics.
  • Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student engagement.
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio‑economic groups to reach their maximum potential.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Effectiveness in teaching undergraduate Data Science courses.
  • Ability and effectiveness in teaching a variety of Statistics/Mathematics courses.
  • Dedication to educating the whole student in a diverse liberal arts environment.
  • Interest/experience in curriculum development and interdisciplinary Data Science collaboration with other STEM disciplines, the social sciences, and/or the humanities.
  • Scholarship with an emphasis on applied, practice‑oriented research and experience/interest in engaging undergraduates in project‑based learning.
  • Professional/industry experience and/or partnerships in Data Science or a related applied field.
Additional Valuable Qualifications
  • Experience with Applied AI/ML and/or data management/engineering.
  • Ability to adapt to/incorporate emerging technologies and comfort in operating in a rapidly evolving field.
  • Commitment to student outcomes, including career advising and connecting students to internships.

The salary range for this position at the Assistant Professor level is $90,000 - $93,000 depending on previous experience in a tenure‑track teaching position.
