Job Summary

The Department of Computer Science at Angelo State University invites applications for two full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Artificial Intelligence, beginning in August 2027. The successful candidates will support undergraduate and graduate programs in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science through teaching, research, student mentoring, curriculum development, and service.

Applications are encouraged from candidates across the full breadth of artificial intelligence, including both software- and hardware-oriented areas. Relevant fields may include machine learning, generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, autonomous systems, edge and embedded AI, computer architecture, AI accelerators, neuromorphic computing, and hardware-software co-design.

Each faculty member will normally teach three courses per semester, maintain an active research agenda, pursue external funding, mentor students, and contribute to interdisciplinary AI initiatives across the university. The academic appointment, tenure home, and formal evaluation pathway are within the Department of Computer Science.

  • Teach three undergraduate and/or graduate courses per semester in artificial intelligence, computer science, data science, computer engineering, or related areas, as assigned by the Department Chair.
  • Develop and continuously improve courses, laboratories, assignments, and other instructional materials that support Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science programs.
  • Maintain an active research and scholarly agenda in artificial intelligence or a related field, including software-, systems-, or hardware-oriented research.
  • Develop and submit proposals for external funding and participate in externally funded research, educational, or workforce-development initiatives.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, capstone projects, applied AI projects, professional development, and career preparation.
  • Collaborate with faculty across Computer Science, Engineering, and other disciplines on AI-related research, curriculum, student projects, and institutional initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service, including assessment, advising, recruitment, student success, committee work, outreach, and program development.
  • Develop appropriate partnerships with industry, government, educational institutions, and community organizations to advance AI education, research, and workforce development.

  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence concepts, methods, systems, and applications, with depth in one or more software-, systems-, or hardware-oriented areas.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging developments in artificial intelligence, computer science, computer engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching practices, student-learning assessment, curriculum development, and instructional technology.
  • Knowledge of research methods, scholarly publication, grant development, and externally funded projects.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned doctorate in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent. ABD candidates will be considered, provided the doctorate is completed no later than September 1, 2027.
  • Academic preparation and expertise appropriate for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related areas.
  • Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, effective university-level teaching and student mentoring.
  • Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, an active research and scholarly agenda in artificial intelligence or a related software-, systems-, or hardware-oriented field.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the instructional, research, and service missions of the Department of Computer Science and the university.
