Responsibilities include teaching five courses per year, contributing to committees, and maintaining a program of sustained creative activity or research.

Competenze

MFA or terminal degree in Graphic Design or Visual Communications.
Teaching experience at undergraduate level strongly preferred.
Professional design experience is an asset.

Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Department of Art at Sam Houston State University invitesapplications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor ofArt in Graphic Design, beginning Fall 2027.

We are seeking an innovative and dedicated educator whose practicebridges print, interactive, and emerging design fields, withdemonstrated expertise in contemporary design technologies and awillingness to explore and integrate AI-driven tools and emergingworkflows. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability toadapt to evolving industry standards and to prepare students forcareers in a rapidly changing creative landscape. A strongcommitment to foundational design principles, conceptualdevelopment, and research-based , forward-thinking designpedagogy is essential.

Duties include teaching 5 courses per year (3/2 course load),service on departmental, college, and university committees, andinclude an expectation of sustained, peer-reviewed creativeactivity or scholarly research.

Educational Requirements for the Position

Candidates must possess an MFA or terminal degree in Graphic Designor Visual Communications and demonstrate outstanding potential inresearch and/or creative activity.

Experience Required for the Position

Teaching experience at the undergraduate level is stronglypreferred. Professional Design experience is also an asset.

Other Requirements for the Position

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range ofundergraduate Graphic Design courses, including, but not limited toPrinciples of Graphic Design, Typography, Corporate IdentityDesign, UX/UI, Motion Graphics, and Senior Studio in GraphicDesign. Applicants should present a professional portfoliodemonstrating significant achievement in graphic design and/orrelated areas of contemporary design practice.

Incorporating AI applications and emerging technologies intocoursework
Guiding students in production design using equipment such as3D printers and die cutters
Developing and maintaining a forward-thinking curriculumaligned with current industry standards
Demonstrating strong communication, collaboration, andinterpersonal skills
Contributing to the growth and vision of a regionallycompetitive Graphic Design program
Mentoring students in career preparation, internships, andprofessional development
Building connections with design professionals, organizations,and industry partners

In addition tothe University Art Gallery on campus, the Department exhibitsstudent work at a Satellite Gallery in downtown Huntsville and hasMFA studios in the Natural Science and Art Research Center a fewblocks away. Sam Houston State University is located 70 miles northof Houston in Huntsville, TX, surrounded by the Sam HoustonNational Forest.
