The University of Missouri, Columbia is seeking an Assistant Professor of Ancient Mediterranean Studies to begin Fall 2027. The workload distribution is 40% Teaching, 40% Research, 20% Service as a tenure-track role.

The appointee will teach both graduate and undergraduate courses (normally four per academic year), offer Greek language courses, mentor students, supervise theses and dissertations, and contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives within the department and college.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Classical Studies or a closely related field by appointment.
• Evidence of research in Ancient Greek Language, Literature, and Culture.
• Teaching experience at graduate and undergraduate levels and in interdisciplinary contexts.
• Ability to mentor theses and dissertations and contribute to strategic university goals.

Job Description

The University of Missouri, Columbia is seeking an Assistant Professor of Ancient Mediterranean Studies to begin Fall 2027. The workload distribution for this tenure-track role is 40% Teaching, 40% Research, 20% Service.

The Department of Classics, Archaeology, and Religion (CAR) welcomes applicants with expertise in Ancient Greek Studies, broadly construed to include Language, Literature, and Cultural History. The research specialization should complement current areas of strength in the department and enhance an interdisciplinary environment that educates students in philology, cultural history, and archaeology.

In addition to actively researching and publishing in the field of Ancient Greek Studies, the candidate will teach both graduate and undergraduate courses (normally four [4] courses per academic year) to support the curricular needs of the Ancient Mediterranean Studies program. Candidates should be prepared to offer Greek language courses at all levels, courses on Greek literature and cultural history in translation, as well as advanced topics courses in their area of specialization and graduate seminars on theory and methods. The appointed person will be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students, supervise theses and dissertations, serve on departmental committees, and make meaningful contributions toward the goals set out in the College of Arts and Science Strategic Plan.

About the Department: CAR offers the undergraduate BA degree in both Ancient Mediterranean Studies (which includes courses in Ancient Greek and Latin) and Religious Studies, and the graduate MA and PhD degrees in Ancient Mediterranean Studies (in Archaeology, Classical Languages, or Classical Arts and Humanities). Our home, Swallow Hall, contains a sizeable working-library, the Ferd and Ann LaBrunerie Classics Library. Our subscriptions to the Brepols Library of Latin Texts and the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae give access to vast digital resources and databases for the study of Classical Languages. The Assistant Professor in Ancient Mediterranean Studies will have at their disposal the academic and cultural resources of a Research I university, including the MU Museum of Art and Archaeology, Ellis Library, Special Collections, and a wide range of venues for comparative and interdisciplinary discourse, such as the Center for the Humanities and the Middleton Center for Race, Citizenship, and Justice.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• -Ph.D. in Classical Studies or a closely related field focusing on the Greek or Roman World by the time of appointment.

Candidates will be evaluated on:

• -Research agenda and publication record with demonstrated strength in Ancient Greek Language, Literature and Culture.
• -Teaching experience and/or potential to contribute to the AMS curriculum at all levels.
• -Language competencies relevant to research and teaching area.
• -Potential for significant contribution to the mission of a public research university.
