An educational institution in Russellville is seeking a full-time faculty member for the Department of Agriculture and Tourism. This position involves teaching undergraduate courses in animal science, conducting research, and providing service to the university. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD or DVM and have experience in the animal science field. Responsibilities include advising students and engaging in community outreach. Position Summary:
This is a full-time 9-month contract position with a teaching, service, and scholarship appointment in the Department of Agriculture and Tourism in the College of Business and Economic Development. The percentages (80% teaching, 10% service, 10% scholarship) and the contract length may vary, potentially becoming a 12-month contract depending on the level of service required for internal policy and animal care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop an innovative teaching and research program in agriculture.
The primary duty will be to teach and assess a variety of undergraduate courses and labs in animal science and/or other courses based on interests and programmatic needs.
Engage students in high-impact learning practices.
Engage in assessment and continuous improvement of the animal science program.
Effectively advise and mentor students at the undergraduate level.
Conducting research and publishing manuscripts in refereed journals related to their field of expertise or on the scholarship of teaching and learning, and actively seeking external funding.
Provide meaningful service to the department, college, university, and profession.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Head and/or Dean.
Additional duties will include effectively advising undergraduate students, advising the Pre-Vet Club, and serving on departmental, college, and/or university committees.
Interaction with and outreach to the general public and participation in related academic societies is strongly encouraged.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills, strong people skills, and a history of collaborating effectively with colleagues.
The successful candidate will have the expertise to support the undergraduate agriculture program with a primary focus on upper-level courses in the core and animal science curriculum depending on departmental needs, the individual's interest, educational background, and skill level.
The incumbent will be expected to advise and mentor undergraduate students and engage with appropriate student organizations.
The faculty members will have an interest in or experience with faculty-student collaborative research, scholarship, and creative activity both at the undergraduate.
Faculty members are expected to accomplish a record of scholarly achievement, including (but not limited to) mentoring undergraduate research projects, grant writing, and establishing an externally funded research program in keeping with the objectives of the Department of Agriculture and Tourism at Arkansas Tech University.
Minimum Requirements:
PhD in animal science (or related field) or DVM with large animal experience.
(*Additional stipend is available to candidates that hold a DVM and license to practice in Arkansas, with a willingness to serve the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and hold/obtain Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) training and certification).
ABD candidates are encouraged to apply.
Industry experience may substitute for the terminal degree requirement; however, the candidate would be hired as an instructor rather than tenure-track.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of the animal science and agriculture sectors.
Experience working with livestock.
Experience teaching face-to-face in a classroom and lab setting.
Demonstrated innovations in teaching.
A record of publication of peer-reviewed research.
Demonstrated strategy for extramural funding to support research and outreach programs.
Work Location, Environment, and Physical Demands:
This position is located in offices, classrooms, and at the teaching farm at ATU.
The position is assigned a desk and computer in a location that may be in a different building than the classroom location, so the position requires the ability to change location and/or walk moderate distances during the day.
Required activities include: teaching and lecturing, standing, and sitting for extended periods, working with livestock, use of livestock handling equipment, use of a keyboard and mouse, and use of standard office equipment.
