Description

The Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in neuroimmunology at the Assistant Professor level. This hire is for a Presidential Frontier Faculty (PFF), a university-wide strategic initiative designed to recruit exceptional scholars to drive innovation in high-priority fields. This search coincides with a historic moment for neurodegenerative research in the state, marked by the imminent launch of the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT), a $3 billion state-funded initiative dedicated to accelerating breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s, dementia, and related brain disorders. The successful candidate will be uniquely positioned to leverage this expansive new state funding landscape.

We seek an outstanding scientist whose research investigates the role of the immune system in nervous system function, dysfunction, or neurodegeneration. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, neuroimmune interactions, neuroinflammation, glial biology, immune mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, and the development of immune-based therapeutic approaches. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field. Competitive candidates will have a strong record of scientific achievement and publication, demonstrate the potential to establish an innovative, independent, and externally funded research program, and show a commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

The successful candidate is also expected to: 1. Collaborate with faculty within the department and across the university, particularly within the expanding neuroscience and biomedical research community; 2. Contribute to the university’s strategic initiatives related to neurodegenerative diseases, including participation in the newly developing UH MIND (Multidisciplinary Institute for Neuroscience and Dementia at UH); and 3. Demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

The Department of Biology and Biochemistry provides state-of-the-art laboratory space within the Science and Engineering Research Center (SERC), access to advanced core facilities, and abundant opportunities for collaboration within the university and with nearby institutions, including the Texas Medical Center, of which UH is a member.
