The University of Texas at Austin, School ofArchitecture invites applications and nominations for accomplished designers and educators to join the faculty. The positions are full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor appointments with responsibilities for research/creative practice, teaching, mentorship, and service beginning Fall 2027. This coordinated search seeks to make at least three new appointments in architecture across the following areas: Design and Speculative Practice; Building Performance and Environmental Systems; and Computational Design and Architectural Fabrication. Exceptional, tenured candidates at a higher rank will also be considered.
We seek collaborative colleagues whose design work and experience offer inspiring, relevant, and innovative perspectives through research, scholarship, critical practice, and pedagogy. Our foremost priorities are excellence in teaching, strong design ability, and an ambitious, design-oriented research or creative-practice agenda. We welcome a broad range of design specializations, methods, and modes of practice, including work that crosses or expands the areas described below.
Candidates should be prepared to teach core and advanced design studios in the undergraduate and graduate architecture curricula, together with courses related to their expertise.
We seek colleagues whose work advances architectural design and the modes of practice through which it engages the world. We welcome candidates whose built work, speculative projects, scholarship, or critical practice advance compelling disciplinary questions and connect them to design education and the profession.
We seek colleagues who approach environmental performance, energy use, and building systems as instruments of design rather than downstream calculations. Potential expertise includes envelope and facade design; passive and climate-responsive strategies; energy and performance simulation; measurement and sensing; and thermal comfort, daylight, and indoor environmental quality. We seek candidates able to connect technical depth to architectural design and to teach within the required environmental systems and building-performance curriculum, alongside research-related seminars and design studios.
We seek colleagues whose computational and material approaches expand how architecture is conceived, represented, tested, and made. Potential expertise includes computational design, artificial intelligence, simulation, digital fabrication, robotics, and experimental making. We particularly welcome work linking computation and material intelligence to advanced manufacturing, prefabrication, responsive assemblies, or building-envelope systems, including applications to climate-responsive construction or housing.
Faculty in the School of Architecture are expected to pursue scholarly or practice-based work that contributes to the advancement of their field and to mentor students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will work primarily within the Architecture program but will also be hired into the School of Architecture as a whole, which is non-departmentalized. This structure ensures that all faculty participate in dialogue and collaboration across programs, strengthening the interdisciplinarity that characterizes the school.
We also welcome opportunities for collaboration with the Cockrell School of Engineering and other university research communities, particularly in computation, robotics, materials, manufacturing, energy, and environmental systems. Existing cross-disciplinary partnerships are welcome but not required for appointment. Future collaborations would build on the strengths and research directions of the faculty hired.
The University of Texas at Austin is one of the largest and most highly regarded public universities in the United States. The School of Architecture offers professionally accredited and post-professional degree programs in Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, and Community and Regional Planning, in addition to post-professional and research degree programs in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Sustainable Design, and Urban Design. The Architecture Program offers accredited professional degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as a graduate research-oriented post-professional degree.
As the 11th most populous city in the US, Austin is a thriving, culturally vibrant community with rich natural environs. It is centrally located in the growing megaregion of Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio and capitalizes on the rich borderland culture between Mexico and the United States. The city’s rapid transformation provides opportunities and resources for professional education while also enabling students to gain a broader view of their field concerning contemporary, local, and global challenges to the built and natural environment.
Candidates must hold a terminal professional design degree or a PhD appropriate to the field, with a design orientation. Candidates should demonstrate strong design capabilities; effective teaching or clear potential for teaching excellence, appropriate to their experience; and the potential for significant contributions through research, scholarship, or creative practice. We welcome academic and professional backgrounds, including licensed practitioners. Candidates considered at a higher rank should demonstrate a record commensurate with that rank.
