Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial, Mechatronics and Systems Engineering. The position focuses on systems engineering, autonomy, intelligent systems, and software-intensive engineered systems, with expectations for research funding and excellence in teaching.
Successful candidates will build a sustainable externally funded research program and contribute to undergraduate and graduate education
Morgan State University is Maryland’s preeminent public urban research university and a designated National Treasure, charting the futures of its residents through educational and research opportunities. Located in the heart of Baltimore, the university serves as an educational and economic engine for local, national, and international communities. Econsult Solutions reports that Morgan State University generated $1.5 billion for the state economy and $891 million for Baltimore in 2024. With a deep commitment to expanding opportunity for groups underrepresented in engineering, the Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. School of Engineering contributes through innovative programs and excellence in teaching, research, and service.
The Department of Industrial, Mechatronics and Systems Engineering ( IMSE ) was formed through the reorganization of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering with the Mechatronics Engineering program. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, a Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics Engineering, a Master of Engineering, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering. The Industrial Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET ( EAC - ABET ), and is the only program of its kind in the State of Maryland. The Mechatronics Engineering program is the only program of its kind offered at an HBCU in the State of Maryland. The Mechatronics program will be seeking initial EAC - ABET accreditation during the upcoming 2027 review cycle.
IMSE invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track faculty position in systems engineering, autonomy, and intelligent systems. The department seeks colleagues who can contribute across both of its undergraduate programs.
The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen the department’s research enterprise by developing a sustainable, externally funded research program at the intersection of systems engineering, autonomous systems, robotics, intelligent cyber-physical systems, and software-intensive engineered systems, while contributing to teaching and curricular development across Industrial Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering.
Develop competitive research proposals and pursue external funding from federal agencies, industry, and other sponsors in areas aligned with systems engineering, autonomous systems, robotics, intelligent cyber-physical systems, artificial intelligence, digital engineering, and cyber-physical security and resilience.
Publish high-quality peer-reviewed research; recruit, advise, and mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers; and contribute to growth in doctoral research activity and research visibility.
Develop and expand experimental platforms, research laboratories, and cyber-physical testbeds that support sponsored research as well as hands-on teaching, laboratory instruction, and course development.
Contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction in areas aligned with the candidate’s expertise in systems engineering and intelligent cyber-physical systems, while supporting the broader educational needs of the Industrial Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering programs.
Advise undergraduate and graduate students.
The department is particularly interested in candidates with background and interests in systems engineering, software and information systems engineering, and supply chain and logistics systems, combined with capability in one or more of the following: robotics and autonomous systems, machine perception and computer vision, applied machine learning for engineering systems, and security of cyber-physical systems. Because several of the courses attached to this position are software-intensive, demonstrated strength in software architecture and development for engineered systems is of particular importance.
To support the department’s research growth, additional areas of interest include embodied and edge AI, intelligent control, human-robot teaming, trustworthy AI, cyber-physical security, and digital engineering. Other areas include verification and validation of autonomous systems, systems-of-systems engineering, autonomous manufacturing and logistics, and digital-twin environments, with particular interest in research connecting systems methods to autonomous and cyber-physical platforms.
Experience with model-based systems engineering, digital twins, or simulation of complex engineered systems is welcome. Evidence of the ability to teach effectively across both industrial engineering and mechatronics engineering subject matter is of particular value.
An earned doctorate, held at the time of appointment, in Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
Involvement in curriculum and laboratory development.
Hands-on laboratory development experience in robotics, embedded systems, or autonomous platforms.
Salary Range $75,000 - $90,000 / year
