MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

FUNCTION

This is a faculty position who reports to the Chairman, Department of Interventional Radiology, who reports to the Head, Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

SCOPE

Interventional Radiology is an administrative unit that provides comprehensive image guided interventions as well as selected non-invasive diagnostic services using the various imaging modalities currently available. In the discharge of the institution's mission, members of the department provide:

(1) excellent, comprehensive and compassionate care for the patients who have or may have

cancer;

(2) Image guided interventions in a cost-effective environment;

(3) programs and projects conducted to advance fundamental or clinical understanding of cancer;

(4) education for medical students, residents, fellows and pre- and post-graduate scientists; and

(5) interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to clinical care, research and education.

The members of the Interventional Radiology Department are appointed upon the recommendation of the Department Chair, and report to the Chairman for day-to-day operations. Under the direction of the Chairman, members are responsible for high standards in clinical care, research and education. These responsibilities require the ability to reason deductively, act decisively, communicate verbally and in writing with a wide variety of persons, interact with highly sophisticated technology and understand complicated and comprehensive concepts, technologies and documents.

KEY FUNCTIONS

1. Clinical

Faculty members are responsible for discharge of clinical activity within the department, wherever those facilities may be located. The members must have mobility to travel to any required location and be able to deliver the required standard of clinical care at any site. The minimum standard is the practice of clinical interventional radiology in an exemplary manner according to standards set forth by the Texas Medical Board and the American Board of Radiology. The members must be able to perform the various procedures that fall within the scope of Interventional Radiology as well as follow-up of patients under their care. They must be capable of providing clinical consultation in the discipline for referring physicians.

2. Research

Actively engage in clinical and/or basic research and scholarly activity in keeping with the goals of the Department and Institution. Requires the ability to assess research opportunity and potential, to develop and coordinate research programs, to identify and make application for funding support.

3. Education/Teaching

Fully participate in focused educational programs for patients, support staff and physicians at various levels of training. Requires the ability to develop and implement such programs and communicate appropriately with any trainee as necessary. Community outreach programs will require travel beyond the Medical Center.

4. Extramural

Represent the Department of Interventional Radiology in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to the field of Interventional Radiology. Will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with department colleagues verbally or in writing.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships including other physicians, patients and a multitude of workforce members across the department, division, and institution.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:

Required:

Medical degree

Board certification (or obtained within departmental timelines) by the American Board of Radiology

Licensure by the Texas Medical Board or Faculty Temporary License

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

EXPERIENCE:
Required:

o At least 2 years’ experience as Instructor or 5 years post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residences or fellowships)

o Has taken steps to initiate education activities including mentoring

Preferred:

- Promise of ability to participate in collaborative research and in team science

- CAQ certified (or eligible if a recent graduate) in Interventional Radiology

- Post residency training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

- Shows evidence of excellence in clinical care and performance

- Shows evidence of ability to develop an essential role in patient care services

- Demonstrates potential for institutional service

- Shows promise for effective participation in teams as appropriate for this role

This position has a target base salary of $468,479 to $564,000 and is eligible for incentive compensation, comprehensive health, wellness, time off, savings, and retirement benefits, as well as relocation support, as applicable.
