About the Department

Why ISE at NC State?

In ISE, you will be part of a department where innovative research happens both within and across disciplines. The Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering includes more than 25 faculty, 10 core staff, 350 undergraduate students, and 250 graduate students, including approximately 75 Ph.D. students. Our research spans advanced and biomedical manufacturing; health systems; human systems; supply chain and logistics; and systems analytics and optimization, along with interdisciplinary collaborations across the university and beyond. Our faculty are internationally recognized in their fields, with Fellows of IISE, INFORMS, SME, and other professional societies.

You will join a collaborative and collegial community where faculty work across traditional disciplinary boundaries and engage with researchers, medical schools, universities, industry, and government partners. The department leads three centers and multiple interdisciplinary graduate programs, creating opportunities to pursue research and educational collaborations well beyond ISE. In addition to degrees in ISE, the department leads the professional Master’s in Engineering Management program and collaborates on the graduate Operations Research program.

The department houses two state-funded centers that are public-private partnerships: the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina, the only center of its kind at a U.S. public research institution, and the Center for Additive Manufacturing and Logistics, one of the most advanced manufacturing and 3D printing laboratories in the country. The newly established Bezos Center for Alternative Proteins is also led by an ISE faculty member. These centers provide additional opportunities to collaborate with industry and pursue research with real-world impact.

You will have access to world-class laboratory and research facilities supporting computing, manufacturing, human factors, and ergonomics research. These resources are complemented by Fitts-Woolard Hall, our state-of-the‑art home on NC State’s Centennial Campus, located near the award‑winning Hunt Library and numerous industry and government facilities. Centennial Campus provides a unique environment for university–industry collaboration and interdisciplinary research.

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at NC State University invites applications for open‑rank, tenure‑track faculty positions at all career stages. Minimum Education and Experience

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering or a related area along with appropriate experience by their start date:

• Rank of Assistant Professor – Demonstrated ability and the potential for directing activities in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility; ability and willingness to participate in department, college, and university affairs; a doctoral degree in Industrial Engineering or closely‑related discipline.
