Job summary

• Establish a solid and productive research program with emphasis in area of specialization, including seeking extramural funding
• Submit an annual report of creative/research, teaching, and public outreach activities funded by the Burgum Endowed Chair.

• $60,000+ Dependent on Experience, 9-month contract, Exempt

Purpose of Position

The Department of Art & Design is seeking to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in any studio art with a specialization in Emerging Technologies and Artificial Intelligence (New Media) in the Visual Arts. In addition to salary and benefits, the Burgum Arts & Sciences Endowed Chair will receive professional development funding annually to support travel as well as equipment for teaching and creative activities/research. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, produce creative activities/scholarship, and do service that contributes to the mission of the department, the college, and the university.

The Department of Art & Design is housed in the College of Arts & Sciences and currently offers an MFA in Visual Arts, BFAs in Visual Arts and Graphic Design, a BA in Visual Arts, and minors in Art History, Graphic Design, and Visual Arts. The department is the recipient of a generous annually recurring endowment from the Myers Foundations that supports a robust visiting artists program, curation of art exhibitions, and resources to enhance student teaching and learning among other activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful applicant will receive a contract with an approximate distribution of 52% teaching (3/2), 38% research/creative activity, and 10% service. More specific duties and responsibilities for this position include:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in a studio art with an emphasis on the integration of emerging technologies and AI (new media)
• Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
• Serve as a catalyst for attracting and supporting graduate students in the MFA in Visual Arts Program
• Establish a solid and productive research program with emphasis in area of specialization, including seeking extramural funding to support individual and collaborative projects aligned with the UND LEADS Strategic Plan
• Submit an annual report of creative/research, teaching, and public outreach activities supported by professional development funds provided by the Burgum Arts & Sciences Endowed Chair Endowment.

Minimum Requirements

• MFA in Visual Arts (any studio art)
• Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

• Record of success as a practicing artist with established exhibition/creative activities significantly involving the utilization of emerging technologies and/or AI (new media)
• Record of scholarship and/or theory on issues related to the integration of emerging technologies and AI in the artworld and broader social and cultural contexts
• Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels in studio art
• Experience developing and teaching courses on the utilization of emerging technologies and AI in the visual arts
• Experience with teaching and course development for in-person and online environments, including asynchronous delivery methods
• Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and supervising BFA/MFA research/creative projects
• Record of involvement in seeking extramural funding
