The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University ofColorado Boulder (CU Boulder) invites applications for atenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level tobegin August 2027. We seek candidates working in computationalmathematics or physical applied mathematics (nonlinear waves, dynamical systems, applied partial differential equations) tosustain and grow the department's long-standing strengths in theseareas. We are especially interested in candidates whose researchconnects to modern methods and applications, including machinelearning/artificial intelligence and quantum science. CU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with allapplicable federal, state, and local laws governingnondiscrimination in employment. We are committed to creating aworkplace where all individuals are treated with respect anddignity, and we encourage individuals from all backgrounds toapply, including protected veterans and individuals withdisabilities.
The Department of Applied Mathematics is home to a diverse andenergetic faculty and staff. Our 21 tenured and tenure-trackfaculty work on areas that span computational mathematics, nonlinear mathematics including nonlinear dynamics and waves, mathematical biology, physical applied mathematics, probability, and statistics and data sciences. The Department sits at thecrossroads of the university's two largest colleges, being rosteredin the College of Arts and Sciences while teaching students in theCollege of Engineering. For more information see: Academics |Applied Mathematics | University of Colorado Boulder. Thisplacement between the two colleges provides opportunities forfaculty to easily build collaborations across a wide range ofdisciplines.
Our Computational Mathematics group is known for its contributionsto the numerical analysis of partial differential equations, spectral methods, optimization, high performance computing, andfast algorithms, with applications spanning inverse problems, dataassimilation, imaging and signal processing, and machine learning. Our Applied Nonlinear PDEs and Dynamics group has a strongtradition in wave phenomena, dynamical systems, partialdifferential equations, and network science, with applicationsspanning fluid dynamics, condensed matter, optics, and plasmaphysics, as well as social and physical networks. This search comesas the department looks to renew and extend these traditions.
Boulder has a rich quantum science and technology researchcommunity. Six decades of work at CU Boulder and JILA, theuniversity's joint institute with the National Institute ofStandards and Technology, have produced four Nobel laureates inphysics, and the CUbit Quantum Initiative now coordinates quantumresearch, education, and industry engagement across campus and withneighboring federal laboratories. That research base anchors aregional industry of more than fifty quantum companies, the CUBoulder-led Colorado Quantum Incubator, and the federallydesignated Elevate Quantum Tech Hub. The campus is investingcomparably in artificial intelligence and machine learning, hostingthe NSF AI Institute for Student-AI Teaming and coordinating AIresearch, teaching, and infrastructure campuswide through theArtificial Intelligence Strategic Steering Committee. Appliedmathematicians at CU Boulder are well positioned to draw on andcontribute to both communities.
Faculty are expected to do research, teaching, and serviceaccording to a 40%, 40%, 20% split, respectively. The successfulcandidate will develop and conduct an independent,externally-fundable research program in computational mathematicsor physical applied mathematics; contribute to undergraduate andgraduate teaching, including courses such as numerical analysis, convex and non-convex optimization, theoretical machine learning, dynamical systems, nonlinear waves, partial differential equations, and asymptotic methods; and advise graduate students.
We seek candidates who can make significant contributions totheir scholarly discipline and who are strong teachers. Thisposition requires a dedication to teaching in our undergraduate andgraduate programs and to developing and conducting an innovativeindependent research program. The department serves a large andvaried student body across two colleges, and we welcomeapplications from all qualified candidates.
$115,000 — $130,000: Candidates may expect starting salarieswithin the posted range depending upon accomplishments includingpublication record, external funding, and years of experience in a comparable faculty position within this field. Start up funding, arecruitment incentive, and a moving allowance may be available tothe successful candidate per department guidelines.
