Job Description

IMPORTANT NOTE: Candidates selected for the Assistant Chemical Engineer position will be appointed on a provisional basis and must pass the civil service examination to be considered for permanent employment. Failure to pass or be reached on the list will result in termination.

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) manages water supply, wastewater, and pollution reduction for New York City. DEP operates 19 reservoirs, 3 lakes, and employs nearly 6,000 staff.

The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) oversees sewage treatment facilities across the five boroughs, including 14 treatment plants, sludge facilities, collection systems, laboratories, and harbor vessels.

Assistant Process Engineers are responsible for:

• Process Oversight and Optimization: Monitoring and analyzing facility data, preparing reports, guiding plant staff on process improvements, and implementing resource recovery programs.
• Process Modeling: Running BioWin and Excel models, testing scenarios, and assessing risks.
• Information Systems (WIMS/CLAROS/SCADA): Utilizing WIMS, assisting with system implementation, understanding SCADA architecture, generating trends, and basic programming.
• Facility Maintenance Support: Calibrating instruments, reviewing work orders, and ensuring equipment functionality.
• Environmental Stewardship: Monitoring emissions, participating in odor surveys, and managing greenhouse gas metrics.
• Leadership: Participating in meetings, data analysis, supporting technology implementation, mentoring colleagues, and contributing to strategic plans.

Qualifications

• Baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering and one year of experience, or
• Baccalaureate degree plus a master's degree in chemical engineering. A master's degree can substitute for one year of experience.
