Job summary

Saint Joseph School in Mechanicsburg, PA seeks an Assistant Elementary Principal within the Diocese of Harrisburg to provide spiritual and educational leadership and manage school operations in alignment with Catholic values.

The successful candidate will support the Principal, Pastor, and Superintendent, lead curriculum development, student welfare, discipline, and staff development, and foster a faith-filled community through collaboration with parishes and the Development Program.

Qualifications

  • A practicing Catholic, whose values align with Catholic Church teachings, and committed to fostering a faith community among staff and students.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree, preferably in Educational Administration or related field
  • At least three years of satisfactory Catholic school teaching and/or administrative experience
  • Diocesan certification in religious studies or commitment to attain within first three years

Responsibilities

  • Administer the school according to Diocesan and local policies.
  • Provide leadership for achieving Catholic education goals and for religious formation.
  • Integrate the Catholic Philosophy of Education into the curriculum and foster a Catholic community within the school.
  • Lead the staff and students in faith formation, parish collaboration, and ongoing development of students and faculty.
  • Oversee scheduling, discipline, and the school’s operation within approved budgets with the Principal, Pastor, and Board

The Assistant Elementary School Principal in the Diocese of Harrisburg holds primary responsibility for spiritual and educational leadership, as well as the administration of the school, which aims to provide high‑quality academic programs integrated with religious truths and values. The Assistant Elementary School Principal is directly accountable to the school's Principal, Pastor/Executive Pastor, and the Superintendent of Schools.

In general, administrative tasks include:

  • Organization of the school so that appropriate religious formation and learning can take place
  • Development of a competent faculty and staff
  • Development and implementation of an appropriate curriculum
  • Provision for the safety, welfare, and care of the students while they are attending school
  • Management of student discipline
  • Management of the financial and business affairs of the school as determined by the approved budget of the school's Principal, Pastor, and Board
  • Development of good school‑community relationships and involvement in all aspects of the Development Program
General Responsibilities
  • To administer the school according to Diocesan and local policies
  • To give leadership for achieving the goals of Catholic education
  • To show evidence of knowledge of the Catholic Philosophy of Education
  • To work towards the creation of a Catholic community within the school
  • To be a leader in the school faith community, integrating the goals and objectives of the school with those of the local parish(es), especially in the faith formation and ongoing development of students and faculty
  • To provide the staff and students with opportunities for prayer and the sacraments
  • To maintain open channels for two‑way communications with all segments of the school clientele
  • To show respect for individuals and fairness in dealing with others
Relationship with the Board
  • To report regularly to the Board in union with the Principal regarding implementation of diocesan/local policies, curriculum development, evaluation, and school concerns
  • To assist the Principal in preparing the necessary background material for local policy formation and long‑range planning
  • To update the Board on current educational trends, issues, new laws, and other in‑service matters that will be useful to them
  • To assist the Board, the Principal, and the Pastor in the preparation of the annual budget and to administer and monitor the approved budget within the designated parameters
Leadership of Faculty and Curriculum Development
  • To hire and assign teachers in conjunction with the principal according to Diocesan policies
  • To provide orientation and ongoing in‑service for the faculty according to their needs
  • To direct and involve the faculty in an ongoing program of philosophy and Mission Statement evaluation, curriculum assessment, and planning for instructional improvement
  • To assist the entire faculty in the integration of the Catholic Philosophy of Education into the curriculum
  • To ensure the implementation of the Diocesan Religion curriculum and a spiritual and religious formation program for the faculty and students
  • To promote the growth of the faculty through ongoing supervision and evaluation
  • To diversify the curriculum to serve the scope of abilities, talents, interests, and needs of students
  • To be familiar with all textbooks and instructional materials used throughout the school
  • To devise a plan for the regular replacement of textbooks and materials
  • To assist teachers in the guidance, assessment, and analysis of student achievement
  • To provide the faculty with materials and resources necessary for their assigned tasks
  • To conduct monthly faculty meetings and to provide opportunities for faculty involvement in the agenda preparation in conjunction with the principal
  • To oversee the scheduling of classes and daily lesson planning by teachers
  • To meet regularly with the Principal
Management and Record Keeping
  • To develop and communicate routine procedures for the operation of the school
  • To publish rules, regulations, schedules, and procedures, and to be consistent with expectations regarding them
  • To maintain discipline throughout the school so that a learning environment prevails
  • To unify expectations for high academic standards throughout the school
  • To implement fire, tornado, health, and safety codes in the school and on the school grounds
  • To meet deadlines with official school reports and statistics as required by the Diocese and State
  • To keep school files organized in a professional manner
  • To maintain an up‑to‑date professional file on each teacher
  • To be responsible for overseeing that accurate and up‑to‑date cumulative, attendance, and health records are kept on every student
Qualifications
  • A practicing Catholic, whose value system and lifestyle are consistent with Catholic Church teachings, and who is committed to ongoing personal spiritual development. They are willing and able to foster a faith community among faculty members and students
  • An educator who holds a Bachelor's or Master's degree, preferably in Educational Administration or a related field
  • An educator who has had at least three (3) years of satisfactory Catholic school teaching and/or administrative experience
  • An educator who can present evidence of diocesan certification in religious studies comparable to the current requirements established by the Office of Catechist Formation, or one who is committed to attaining such certification within their first three years
