Job Description

The Assistant Press Operator assists Press Operators with press make-ready, operating, and maintaining sheet-fed or web offset printing presses.

This Includes:

• Inserting packing sheets on the plate cylinder to build up the plate to printing height, fastening reinforcing bars to offset blankets, and installing plates and blankets on press cylinders, using hand tools and power tools, to achieve the required pressure for printing.
• Adjusting press machine parts, such as feeder and delivery mechanisms, suction grippers, guides, feed wheels, jogging devices, tapes, and cams, using hand tools.
• Assisting in removing and replacing worn rollers and adjusting pressure between rollers of the press, using hand tools.
• Washing blankets and cleaning ink and ink-distributing rollers and ink fountains, using ink solvent and cleaning mechanisms on the press.
• Helping Press Operators make necessary color or register corrections and/or press adjustments prior to production to meet quality specifications.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and follow job specifications to determine press setup materials needed.
• Skill to operate equipment safely and produce the desired product.
• Ability to use a micrometer to mount and align the printing plate correctly.
• Ability to make adjustments to feeder and feed board, such as adjusting suctions, blast, guides, and timing of head stops.
• Skill in routine operational maintenance and minor repairs under guidance of senior Press Operators.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 2 years of general knowledge of offset presswork procedures and materials.

The pay range is $20.20 to $27.80 per hour, varying based on education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift, and location.
