Job summary

Stabbert Maritime is actively seeking an Assistant Port Engineer to join the Technical Services team in Seattle.

The role focuses on maintaining the technical readiness, reliability, and safe operation of assigned vessels, supporting preventive and corrective maintenance planning, vessel inspections, contractor coordination, inventory tracking, documentation, and follow-up to ensure compliance with company and client requirements.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • BA/BS degree, maritime academy background, technical school, engineering credential, or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Minimum three years of sailing, vessel maintenance, shipyard, marine engineering, or related technical experience preferred.
  • Experience in an engineering role aboard vessels is strongly preferred.
  • Valid US CG engineer’s license, Designated Duty Engineer license, QMED, or other maritime credential preferred but not required.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid passport and TWIC.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to travel locally and internationally, including air travel, with or without notice.
  • Must be able to work in shipyards, production areas, and onboard vessels.
  • Must be able to walk to and from job sites, climb inclined stairways and vertical ladders, enter confined spaces and tanks, and work at heights.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development, tracking, and execution of preventive and corrective maintenance schedules.
  • Support coordination with shipyards, contractors, and vendors for repairs, dry-docking, maintenance periods, and vessel upgrades.
  • Assist in troubleshooting technical issues related to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and vessel support systems.
  • Help ensure assigned vessels are maintained in operational condition to meet schedules, mission requirements, and client expectations.
  • Communicate with vessel Chief Engineers to gather updates, identify technical needs, and support follow-up during missions and port calls.
  • Conduct routine vessel inspections under the direction of the Port Engineer to verify condition, readiness, and compliance with company standards.
  • Assist with tracking maintenance costs, repair estimates, invoices, and technical operating expenses.
  • Maintain accurate records of spare parts, equipment inventory, vendor information, maintenance activity, and repair history.
  • Support preparation for class inspections, surveys, audits, and certifications.
  • Help track regulatory, class, and client-driven technical requirements affecting vessel operations.
  • Coordinate logistics for on-site contractors during maintenance, repairs, and shipyard projects.
  • Assist with gathering contractor scopes of work, bids, quotes, and supporting documentation for Port Engineer review.
  • Support communication between Technical Services, Vessel Operations, vessel crews, vendors, and shipyards.
  • Assist with technical documentation, including service reports, inspection notes, equipment manuals, maintenance records, and project files.
  • Support crew training coordination related to vessel systems, maintenance practices, and safety procedures.
  • Work with HR, Operations, and Technical Services to help confirm that technical crew documentation, qualifications, and certifications are current and properly maintained.
  • Provide technical support to Vessel Managers, Chief Engineers, and crew members during equipment issues, breakdowns, or emergency repairs as directed.
  • Travel to vessels, shipyards, vendor facilities, and project sites as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Port Engineer supports the Port Engineers and Technical Services team in maintaining the technical readiness, reliability, and safe operation of assigned vessels. This role assists with preventive and corrective maintenance planning, vessel inspections, contractor coordination, inventory tracking, documentation, and technical follow-up to help ensure vessels remain operational, compliant, and prepared to meet company and client requirements.


The Assistant Port Engineer works closely with Port Engineers, Vessel Managers, Chief Engineers, contractors, shipyards, and vendors to support day-to-day technical needs, planned maintenance, repairs, surveys, and port-call activities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Assist with the development, tracking, and execution of preventive and corrective maintenance schedules.

  • Support coordination with shipyards, contractors, and vendors for repairs, dry-docking, maintenance periods, and vessel upgrades.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES


  • Working knowledge of vessel mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and auxiliary systems.

  • Ability to assist in analyzing and troubleshooting technical problems, including when vessels are at sea or in remote locations.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with crews, vendors, shipyards, internal teams, and clients.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow tasks through to completion.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn.

  • Ability to work independently while knowing when to elevate issues to the Port Engineer or leadership.

  • Customer-service mindset for both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD, Adobe DC, maintenance tracking systems, or vessel documentation systems preferred.
