Job summary

Hornblower Corp. is seeking an Assistant Port Engineer to monitor and support the preventative maintenance program for a fleet of vessels. The role requires hands-on maintenance, strong mechanical knowledge, and the ability to work under the Port Engineer’s direction.

The ideal candidate will have 3–5 years of diesel vessel experience, familiarity with piping and electrical systems, and a merchant marine engine background. Shore-side position with some on-call requirements and travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • Training from maritime academy or machinery trade school is required.
  • 3-5 years of experience on diesel vessels or closely related machinery systems.
  • Familiar with piping, electrical components, drive trains, reduction gears, hydraulics and water jets.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the preventative maintenance program for the vessels.
  • Alert Port Engineer to machinery or vessel systems needing repair.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs as directed by the Port Engineer.
  • Maintain and service diesel engines, generators, water jets, and reduction gears.
  • Conduct valve timings, injector changes, and cylinder head work.
  • Overhaul water jets, including hubs, cylinders, impellers, and pumps.
  • Repair vessel piping, valves, tanks, and pumps.
  • Rig machinery for major repairs and new installations.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, generators, motors, and sensors.
  • Drydock repairs to drivelines, water jets, couplings, shafts and propellers.
  • Document maintenance via Wheelhouse CM system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

Position Summary:

The engineer will help monitor the company preventative maintenance program and provide hands on maintenance and repair to the vessels under the Port Engineers direction and as situational needs arise on the vessels. The Assistant Port Engineer will need a strong mechanical background both academically and as importantly with hands on tools work ability. The Assistant Port Engineer will also have additional support from the company’s experienced maintenance team including the Port Engineer.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Help monitor the preventative maintenance program for the group of vessels they are responsible.
  • Alert Port Engineer to the machinery or vessel systems in need of repair.
  • Be able to perform and be responsible for much of the preventative maintenance and repair work him or herself as directed by the Port Engineer.
  • Preventative engine maintenance such as machinery oil and filter changes, including but not limited to diesel engines and generators, water jet propulsion equipment, and marine reduction gears.
  • Engine and generator heavy maintenance such as valve timings, injector changes, cylinder head and liner changes.
  • Water jet overhauls including jet hubs, cylinders, impellers and pumps.
  • Vessel piping and plumbing repairs to pipes, valves, tanks, and pumps, large and small.
  • Machinery rigging in and out of the vessel for major repairs and new installations.
  • Low and high voltage electrical troubleshooting and repair of generators, motors, control systems, sensors, and related wiring.
  • Drydock repairs to vessel drivelines,water jets,couplings, shafts and propellers.
  • Documentationand monitoringof maintenance and repair work through the company web based structured maintenance and repair program, Wheelhouse.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications:
  • Training in from maritime academy or a machinery trade school as well as previous experience in these fields is required.
  • 3-5 years of experience on diesel vessels or closely related machinery systems
  • Must be very familiar with motor vessels, diesel engines and their operational support systems.
  • Must have previous training in and be familiar with piping, electrical components, vessel drive trains, shafts, reduction gears, hydraulics and water jets support systems.
  • A merchant mariners marine engineer’s license is desired although not required.
  • This is a shore side position and requires candidates to live within commutable distance.
  • Strong customer service, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain a high level of organization, detailed oriented and meet deadlines.
  • Handle multiple tasks/projects at one time.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by job responsibility.
  • Listen effectively, assess the situation, determine relevant issues, & suggest solutions.
  • Have a working knowledge of computer skills, including but not limited to proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to coworkers and guests.
  • Maintainuniformandpersonalgroomingincompliancewithappearancestandards.
  • Will be required to be available for work nights, weekends and on all major holidays.
