Job summary

Massachusetts Maritime Academy seeks a Port Engineer to assist with maintenance and overhauls on company managed vessels under the supervision of the Port Engineer. The role is based in Houston, TX, and involves overseeing engineering changes, modernization packages, and related activities.

Ideal candidates will hold a USCG Second Engineer Licensed (Unlimited HP); shoreside work can be considered. Must be a US citizen and able to obtain a Secret clearance to support vessel operations.

Qualifications

• Requires US citizenship and ability to obtain Secret clearance.
• Minimum one year experience as Port Engineer managing at least one shipyard dry-docking with value > $3M.
• Experience aboard ocean-going ships ≥ 4,000 HP as First/Second Engineer.

This position is based in Houston, TX

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist with fleet special projects such as but not limited to engineering change, modernization package, or installation design used to modify machinery, control systems, electronics, or hull equipment across the fleet
• Monitor and analyze all appropriate aspects of ship performance
• Support and participate in the organization’s Integrated Management System documentation, implementation, maintenance, and improvement by complying with the IMS Policies and procedures and meeting IMS objectives
• Assist with marine engineering projects such as overhauls and other types of maintenance and repairs
• Understand overhaul requirements, and the preparation of contract work specifications and cost estimates for repair, overhaul, conversion, or construction of ocean-going ships; or a combination of education and experience that provides an equivalent level of knowledge of ship operations and maintenance management
• Regulatory compliance, and vessel management.

Possess a minimum of one-year experience as a Port Engineer having assisted in managing at least one shipyard dry-docking availabilities with a value greater than three million dollars. Experience gained while employed by a shipyard or while serving active duty in the military may be applicable towards meeting this requirement if the duties and responsibilities of the positions are substantially the same as a Port Engineer. This experience shall demonstrate their ability to effectively manage and negotiate complex projects such as shipyard dry dock overhauls and other types of repairs.

Possess a minimum of three years’ experience serving aboard Government or commercial ocean-going ships of not less than 4,000 HP as either a First Assistant Engineer or a Second Assistant Engineer. This experience shall demonstrate effective management of maintenance and repair of ocean-going ships.

Possess a minimum of seven years’ experience that includes one or more of the following: An engineering related degree (e.g. Marine Engineer, Marine Architecture; Mechanical ngineering). A bachelor’s degree will count for three years’ total education experience. A Master’s degree will count for four years’ total education experience. A doctorate degree willcount for four years’ total education experience. Experience gained while employed by a shipyard in a management position

Serving active duty in the military performing duties substantially the same as a Port Engineer. This experience shall demonstrate their ability to manage and negotiate complex projects such as shipyard dry dock overhauls and other types of repairs on ocean-going ships.
