Job summary

Job description

Ocean Shipholdings has an opening for an Assistant Port Engineer located onsite in Houston, TX. This is an exciting opportunity to assist with maintenance and overhauls (VRA & ROH) of one or more U.S. Government owned vessels, under the supervision and direction of a lead Port Engineer.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience in the U.S. commercial or Government maritime industry in either a shore-side or shipboard engineering role.

A U.S. citizen with active Secret Security Clearance or the ability to obtain a government issued security clearance is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with fleet special projects such as but not limited to, TRANSALT development.
  • Monitor and analyze all appropriate aspects of ship performance.
  • Support and participate in the organization’s Integrated Management System documentation, implementation, maintenance, and improvement by complying with the IMS Policies and procedures and meeting IMS objectives.
  • Assist with marine engineering projects such as overhauls and other types of maintenance and repairs.
  • Understand overhaul requirements, and the preparation of contract work specifications and cost estimates for repair, overhaul, conversion, or construction of ocean-going ships; or a combination of education and experience that provides an equivalent level of knowledge of ship operations and maintenance management.
  • Regulatory compliance, and vessel management.
Qualifications
  • Possess a minimum of one-year of experience as a Port Engineer having assisted in managing a minimum of at least one shipyard dry-docking availability valued at a minimum of three million dollars. This experience shall demonstrate their ability to effectively manage and negotiate complex projects such as shipyard dry dock overhauls and other types of repairs.
  • Possess a minimum of three years’ experience serving aboard Government or commercial ocean-going ships of not less than 4,000 HP as either a Chief Engineer, First Assistant Engineer or a Second Assistant Engineer. This experience shall demonstrate effective management of maintenance and repair of ocean-going ships.
  • Possess a minimum of five years that includes a combination of education and experience as outlined below. This experience shall demonstrate their ability to manage and negotiate complex projects such as shipyard dry dock overhauls and other types of repairs on ocean-going ships.
    • An engineering related degree (e.g. Marine Engineer, Marine Architecture; Mechanical Engineering). Time for purposes of meeting this requirement will be the time necessary to obtain the degree as a full time student taking a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester.
    • Experience gained while employed by a shipyard in a management position.
    • Serving as a Port Engineer on a Government or commercial contract.
    • Serving on active duty in the military performing duties substantially the same as a Port Engineer.

A U.S. Coast Guard 2nd Assistant Engineer license or higher is preferred.
