Position Overview:
Provides safety and security services to students, staff, faculty, and visitors through efficient use of departmental resources.
Duties :
- Performs duties of Police Chief and supervises the department during the absence of the Police Chief.
- Develops "Special Event" plans and personnel schedules.
- Shares "On-call" duties and must be able to work any shift, responding/reporting as necessary.
- Finds staff to cover shifts during shortages or call-outs.
- Develops departmental documents, policies, and procedures.
- Oversees fleet duties and reports mechanical issues to the Facilities Department.
- Responds to all calls for service and assistance requests from Meredith College students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
- Supervises security shifts and officers.
- Patrols campus by vehicle or foot.
- Oversees access control to the campus during closing hours.
- Performs traffic control for events.
- Effect arrests, including use of force if necessary.
- Conducts investigations by interviewing or performing searches, exercising independent judgment to determine reasonable suspicion for detention, search, or arrest.
- Supervises, trains, and evaluates subordinates; plans, organizes, and directs activities; reviews subordinate reports.
- Deals firmly and courteously with subordinates and the public.
Qualifications : Skills Needed :
- Knowledge of advanced law enforcement methods, community policing techniques.
- Understanding of arrest laws, evidence laws, probable cause, search and seizure laws, and confidentiality laws.
- Knowledge of Meredith College policies.
- Ability to learn applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Discretion in handling difficult persons and situational analysis skills.
- Ability to observe and remember details, understand emergency alarm systems.
- Knowledge of defensive driving practices; ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Understanding of scope of authority; application of penal code, vehicle code, and other policies.
Key Interfaces :
- Interacts with distressed individuals, mainly students, faculty, or staff.
- Collaborates with Residence Life staff and assists in training related to Clery laws.
- May engage with criminal suspects, using force if necessary.
- Works with agencies like Raleigh Police Department, EMS, and others.
- Serves on promotion boards for outside agencies.
Education and Experience :
- High School Diploma.
- CPR and First Aid Certification.
- BLET and North Carolina Police Officer Certification.
- Valid NC Driver License with a clear driving record.
- Experience in a general office setting with moderate noise levels.
- Outdoor weather exposure and driving on/off campus.
- Ability to walk or run extended distances and climb stairs.
- Occasional lifting of 10-100 lbs.
- Completion of annual state-mandated In-service training.
