Description

The College of Education at the University of Washington invites applications for a teaching faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Secondary Teacher Education with an anticipated start date in Summer Quarter 2027. We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full-time basis for a three-year, nine-month academic appointment beginning September 16, 2027. Renewal of the appointment will be considered in the second year.

The base salary range for this position will be $8,466 - $9,046/per month for an Assistant Teaching Professor and $8,900 - $10,700/per month for an Associate Teaching Professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include up to 3 months of summer salary based on administrative and curricular need.

The successful candidate will be expected to serve as Director of the Secondary Teacher Education Program while upholding the college’s commitment and contributing to the university and college’s strategic plan. The Director of Secondary Teacher Education will join a team of teacher education pathway directors, faculty, staff, students, and school partners who aim to improve the lives of children and families through the quality of learning experiences and supports available in schools and communities. The role combines program leadership, program development and instruction, requiring deep knowledge of the subject area of teacher education and of other disciplinary areas which contribute to teacher education.

Teaching

• Enhance the teaching mission of the University through activities that include curriculum planning, course design, student success, and mentoring
• Teaching load is determined based on expertise, need, and in line with college-wide faculty expectations, which are currently 7-9 courses per year for teaching faculty. Teaching load will be adjusted in accordance with administrative duties (currently 70%) and curricular need. General expectations include teaching at least one full cohort, required course per quarter. Potential courses may include Foundations courses and/or required Methods courses.
• Lead required seminars necessary for teacher certification pathways
• Advise and mentor STEP students; maintain degree requirements, support student progress to degree and certification, develop and coordinate student support plans
• Collaborate with CoE Certification Officer

Instructional Leadership and Program Coordination

• Establish and sustain a vision for STEP, in partnership with instructors, schools, and community partners. Monitor implementation of the vision and lead efforts to support continual learning and program improvement.
• Lead and facilitate STEP program meetings.
• Facilitate faculty involvement in STEP, including coordinating faculty engagement in course design and instruction.
• Oversee daily STEP operations, candidate support structures, and program improvements.
• Collaborate with Assistant Dean, Program Manager and faculty to hire and guide the work of teaching associates, doctoral students, and coaches.
• Collaborate with program faculty to maintain program field placements opportunities in alignment with STEP pedagogies.
• Lead the continuous refinement and implementation of the current STEP coaching framework

Scholarship Related to Teaching & Learning

• Demonstrate scholarship by introducing new knowledge or methods into course content; creating or using innovative pedagogical methods; developing new courses, curricula, or course materials; and/or seeking external funds to support innovations or students
• Contribute to interdisciplinary teaching that advance the content area and pedagogical preparation of STEP students
• Participate in professional conferences and associations to build STEP’s reputation, impact and professional network

Recruitment

• Partner with the program staff to engage in outreach (e.g., applicant consultations, tabling events, info sessions).
• Collaborate with program staff to hold consistent informational sessions online and in-person
• Oversee admissions and program enrollment

Retention

• Collaborate with the program staff to support students
• Serve as academic advisor to STEP students

Service through Professional Development & Partnerships

• Develop training for doctoral student coaches who mentor teacher candidates.
• Actively participate in and with TEP leadership personnel to address the changing landscape of teacher education.
• Foster high-quality school placements and maintain university-school partnerships.
• Maintain a commitment to collaborating with mentor teachers, communities, and community educators
• Engage in faculty governance
• Engage in College and University service that advances teacher education
• Engage in service, commensurate with rank, at the local, state, or national level related to teacher education
