Description

The Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University ofTennessee, Knoxville (UTK) invites applications for a tenure-trackfaculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professorlevel. The department will pursue tenure consideration forqualified candidates. The anticipated start date is August2027 .

Duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses innuclear engineering-related subjects, developing and sustaining anexternally funded research program, advising graduate students,publishing scholarly work, and providing service to the department,college, university, and professional community.

The UT Department of Nuclear Engineering is the largest NuclearEngineering PhD program in the United States, with a diverseresearch portfolio and close collaborations with Idaho NationalLaboratory (INL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Y-12National Security Complex, and more than 150 nuclear-relatedcompanies within 50 miles of the campus. The department is housedin the state-of-the-art Zeanah Engineering Complex, home to morethan 20 nuclear engineering laboratories and computationalresources. The department is committed to cultivating work/lifebalance and a family-friendly environment for faculty, staff, andstudents.

The Tickle College of Engineering (TCE), comprised of ninedepartments that house 213 tenure-track and 80+ non-tenure-trackfaculty, is in the midst of unprecedented growth under ChancellorDonde Plowman and Dean Matthew Mench, having added 30+ new facultyover the past 4 years and set records in research expenditures( $113.9M in FY25), enrollment (4,800 undergraduate and1,500 graduate students), and increased ranking (now 28thamong public universities ) in the US News and World Report list oftop engineering colleges . Key partnerships with Oak RidgeNational Laboratory and Consolidated Nuclear Security (Y-12) andgrowth are supported by new facilities including the ZeanahEngineering Complex and the Innovation South building.

Qualifications

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests strengthenand broaden the department's capabilities in one or more of thefollowing areas: reliability and maintainability of nuclearsystems and components; data analytics, artificial intelligence,digital twin technologies, and cyber security for nuclearapplications; nuclear instrumentation and control; radiationinstrumentation; robust decision-making, empirical/data-drivenmodeling, and process & equipment monitoring; thermal-fluidsciences and experimental reactor thermal-hydraulics .Candidates whose work bridges experimentation, computationalmodeling, sensing, and thermal-fluid or reactor systems analysis insupport of reliable, sustainable nuclear power are especiallyencouraged to apply. Ideally, successful candidates will be able tocontribute across more than one of these areas. Preference will begiven to applicants with demonstrated (or clearly emerging, formore junior candidates) research success that complements existingdepartmental strengths and who have a vision for developingcollaborative, sustainably funded research programs. Candidatesmust also show strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate andgraduate teaching.

Candidates for assistant professor must have a demonstratedpotential to develop a nationally recognized, externally fundedresearch program. Candidates for associate professor must lead anationally recognized externally funded research program anddemonstrate the potential to develop an international recognizedresearch program.

Applicants must hold a doctorate in Nuclear Engineering or aclosely related field by the effective date of appointment.
