Job description

Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University invites applicants for a Assistant or Associate Professor of Church History and Missiology to begin as soon as possible. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and the formation of students for ministry within and beyond the church. Teaching responsibilities include core and elective courses in history and missiology, primarily at the graduate level (on-ground and online) but also at the undergraduate level and in the prison education program. Commitment to Christian faith and participation in the life of the church are marks of Palmer’s faculty. Candidates that are members of, or ordained in, the United Methodist Church with a strong record of ecclesial activity are especially encouraged to apply.

  1. Teaching: Twenty-four credit course-load in traditional and online-flex modalities. Use of the university’s designated online course management system is required.
  2. Methodist Chapel Coordinator: Coordinate regular chapel services that reflect the Methodist tradition but welcomes an ecumenical student body. Encourage the development of Methodist identity and community among UMC students through new initiatives.
  3. Advise and Mentor Students: Participate in the academic advising of Methodist students. Provide advising for UMC students preparing for ministry by serving as liaison to conference boards of ordained ministry, district committees, and district superintendents. Assist with developing reports and responses to UMC accrediting agencies, including the University Senate of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry.
Scholarship: Maintain an active research program. Attend to ways the research contributes to preparing faith-based leaders and aligns with the mission of the university.To be fully considered for this position, submit the following materials: letter of application, current CV, transcripts, a faith statement, and two letters of recommendation.
Qualifications:
  1. Ph.D. in History, Theology, or related field with a concentration in History and Missions.
  2. Excellence in graduate-level teaching with an ability to lead students in exploring both theoretical and practical dimensions of the discipline.
  3. Competence and vision for teaching a diverse student body.
  4. Understanding how Christian history relates to contemporary issues in church and society.
  5. Experience in the life and ministry of the church.
  6. Evidence of pedagogical creativity.
