Job description

Department:Biomedical EngineeringSalary:Commensurate with experience

Description:

The Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering. This highly multidisciplinary position is intended to expand the University of Houston’s strengths in imaging, biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative engineering, and translational biomedical engineering.

The ideal candidate will develop an independent research program focused on the design, fabrication, characterization, imaging, and biological evaluation of advanced biomaterials for tissue repair, regeneration, and disease modeling. The ideal candidate should have notable experience with imaging, 3D-printed and advanced-manufactured biomaterial platforms, including extracellular matrix-derived, decellularized, mineralized collagen, cryogel, polymer-ceramic, and/or composite scaffold systems. Areas of interest include musculoskeletal tissue engineering; bone, cartilage, and osteochondral repair; osteoarthritis modeling and treatment; drug delivery; and biomaterial strategies that modulate inflammation, macrophage polarization, mesenchymal stem cell behavior, osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and other cell-material interactions. Experience with high-throughput scaffold or biomaterial screening platforms, in vitro co-culture systems, quantitative materials characterization, microscopy-based analysis such as multiphoton microscopy, and relevant preclinical models is highly desirable.

The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to connect imaging and biomaterials innovation with clinically relevant questions, including the development of translational approaches for improved tissue repair, implanted material response, and regenerative medicine. The candidate should be prepared to build collaborations with faculty across engineering, medicine, cancer biology, orthopedics, materials science, and translational research, and to contribute to interdisciplinary institutes and externally funded team science.

The candidate should have a strong publication record, a record of technical presentations, experience preparing competitive funding applications, and a clear plan for building an externally funded research program. The candidate should also have strong teaching and mentoring experience and be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biomedical engineering, biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and related quantitative engineering topics. Excellent interpersonal skills, commitment to student mentorship, and readiness to initiate new internal and external collaborations are expected.

Qualifications: Ideal candidate will have PhD in Biomedical Engineering or related field.

Required documents: Cover Letter, Curriculum Vitae, Research Statement, Teaching and Mentoring Statement, and contact information for three professional references.

Employees are expected to have a home address in the state of Texas for the duration of their appointments.

Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidates.

All positions at the University of Houston-System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Individuals conducting research in critical infrastructure areas (i.e., communication infrastructure systems, cybersecurity systems, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment systems, and/or water treatment facilities) are subject to regular review to ensure the security and integrity of the research is maintained.
