As an Assistant Operations Manager, you’ll help lead our teams in maintaining high standards of operational efficiency while prioritizing the safety of all team members. As a steward of operational excellence, an Assistant Operations Manager will need to be flexible and adapt to changing operational needs and schedules. With our dedicated teams working on all three coasts across over 33 ports and 70 locations, you’ll feel empowered to grow professionally while serving the communities in which we operate.

Essential Duties:
  1. Manage the work activities of the Foreman, Labor, and other personnel to meet performance expectations and customer needs.
  2. Determine daily labor needs and ensure appropriate staffing for your assigned area.
  3. Make decisions affecting overtime costs and expenditures, ensuring they serve the best interests of the company and customers.
  4. Identify additional staffing needs and coordinate with relevant representatives to ensure cost-effective staffing.
  5. Ensure payroll accuracy and make necessary adjustments.
  6. Ensure compliance with the company’s Safety program and safety procedures.
  7. Promote accident prevention, safety, and workers' compensation programs among staff.
  8. Coordinate with M&R/Terminal Departments for equipment allocation to meet operational demands.
  9. Maintain positive relations with labor and ensure adherence to Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  10. Address employee performance issues and implement corrective actions when needed.
  11. Advise leadership on labor matters and assist with grievance procedures.
  12. Participate in training sessions for labor and management staff.
  13. Communicate performance expectations and accountability areas to staff.
  14. Develop and improve operating and administrative procedures.
  15. Ensure certifications and training are current for staff.
  16. Follow all company policies and procedures, and complete reports accurately and timely.
  17. Work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
  18. Travel to support other operations as required.
  19. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Physical Working Attributes:
  1. Climb ladders on vessels multiple times per shift.
  2. Work around ships and terminal equipment.
  3. Work in varying weather conditions, hot and cold climates.
  4. Operate in environments that may be hazardous due to moving equipment.
  5. Lift, push, or pull up to 30 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline or equivalent experience.
  2. Experience with Computerized Operating Systems.
  3. Obtain a TWIC Card from the Department of Homeland Security.
  4. Valid US Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Knowledge of safety and accident prevention regulations.
  2. Understanding of cargo stowage and stability.
  3. Proficiency in MS Office.
  4. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  5. Effective time management and organizational skills.
  6. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and influence team performance.
  7. Sound decision-making skills and quick responsiveness to operational issues.
