Job Summary:

With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the assistant nurse manager works with the nurse manager to oversee patient care and nursing services on their assigned unit and shift. They promote quality evidence-based care and patient satisfaction in a fiscally responsible manner. The assistant nurse manager collaborates with the nurse manager in assessing and planning nursing care. They assist in leading daily operations of the unit, act as a resource, lead, and clinical role model for the patient care team, and advance patient care standards for their shift. They facilitate and coordinate patient care delivery and flow through the continuum of care. In the absence of the nurse manager, they carry out managerial responsibilities under guidance. The assistant nurse manager participates in hiring, staff evaluation, and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective unit operations. They support nursing professional development, Magnet, and Shared Governance initiatives through participation and mentoring in councils and programs.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  1. Interact professionally with co-workers, visitors, and staff, embodying Jefferson's values.
  2. Recognize patients and their families/designated care partners, providing safe, compassionate, and coordinated care respecting personal preferences, needs, cultural beliefs, and values.
  3. Plan, direct, and coordinate nursing care for a specific patient care area in collaboration with the nurse manager and staff.
  4. Recruit, interview, and select staff for the unit.
  5. Provide leadership in implementing strategic goals and objectives.
  6. Develop, implement, and evaluate unit policies, procedures, and goals aligned with organizational objectives.
  7. Assist with performance evaluations and serve as a clinical resource on policies, patient standards, and quality improvement.
  8. Contribute to staff evaluations, including probationary reviews for new staff.
  9. Demonstrate effective conflict resolution and utilize disciplinary processes appropriately.
  10. Develop, implement, and evaluate staffing plans to meet patient and family needs.
  11. Identify quality issues and develop improvement programs within a shared governance model.
  12. Ensure compliance with quality and regulatory standards (JCAHO, OSHA, etc.).
  13. Design and evaluate patient satisfaction initiatives.
  14. Serve as a clinical role model and support professional development and educational programs.
  15. Participate in policy development and organizational goal alignment.
  16. Seek opportunities for nursing research and professional growth.
  17. Manage resources within budget constraints, including cost-saving initiatives and revenue opportunities.
  18. Collaborate in budget forecasting.
  19. Educate staff on cost-efficient care, staffing, and resource use.
  20. Monitor staffing schedules, authorize overtime, and manage payroll with the nurse manager.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required; Master's preferred.
  • Professional/leadership certification preferred (e.g., CCRN, CEN, NE-BC), to be obtained within 2 years of hire.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of acute care experience; experience in a similar unit preferred.
  • Current RN licensure in the practicing state; BLS certification from the American Heart Association required.
