The CTICU is an 8-bed intensive care unit specializing in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular interventions, and vascular surgery. We are a growing program, seeing new procedures and admitting upwards of 250+ open heart surgery patients annually. Devices commonly used in this unit include IABP, Impella, EKOs, transvenous pacemakers, and swan-ganz catheters. The unit is supported by Dr. El-Khatib, our primary cardiothoracic surgeon, along with 24/7 intensivists and a team of interventional cardiologists. Our care approach is patient-centered and nurse-driven, emphasizing a multidisciplinary team for quality patient care with daily nurse-led rounds. Our CTICU has received the Bronze Beacon Award twice. Management supports lifelong education and hands-on learning, fostering professional development through shared governance and active unit presence.

Forbes Hospital is a 315-bed, Level II trauma center located in Monroeville. It offers a range of services including trauma, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, obstetrics, and psychiatry, fostering strong community relationships.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This role manages, supervises, and coordinates daily operations of a specific patient care department under the Nurse Manager, providing both clinical and administrative leadership. The role contributes to strategic planning and helps achieve departmental, organizational, and network goals.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership:

  • Model the mission, vision, and values within your areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior in all staff interactions.
  • Act as a change agent, helping staff embrace necessary changes.
  • Conduct monthly unit meetings with minutes, discussing unit and organizational activities and goals when delegated.
  • Complete annual performance appraisals, including peer feedback, professional development plans, and self-assessments for delegated staff.
  • Attend meetings as directed by the Nurse Manager.
  • Support unit-based shared governance, providing consultation and assistance to eliminate barriers.
  • Promote professional development through quarterly staff check-ins and encouraging nursing certifications.
  • Foster employee engagement via leadership rounding.

Quality and Patient Safety:

  • Partner with the Nurse Manager to plan and implement activities ensuring care meets professional standards, safety goals, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitor departmental performance, develop action plans for unmet goals, and participate in regulatory readiness.
  • Contribute to annual quality planning and performance improvement projects.

Customer Satisfaction:

  • Collaborate with patients, families, and staff to meet patient experience goals.
  • Address patient and departmental concerns, conduct daily rounds, and develop improvement plans.

Finance:

  • Implement financial plans in partnership with the Nurse Manager.
  • Use resources efficiently, maintain budgets, and monitor variances.
  • Complete daily productivity tracking and address overtime issues with documentation.

Professional Growth and Development:

  • Support staff development through coaching and creating a learning environment.
  • Ensure proper onboarding, education, and credentialing in collaboration with specialists.
  • Encourage participation in councils, committees, and educational programs.
  • Promote peer review and conduct quarterly developmental goal reviews.
  • Identify personal areas for improvement annually and develop improvement plans.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (required within 3 years of hire or transfer)
  • At least 1 year of clinical leadership experience
  • Act 34, Act 33, and Act 73 FBI Background Clearances
  • Current PA RN license or multi-state license via eNLC
  • CPR certification

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • National Certification
