Job summary

KRDO13 in Colorado Springs is seeking an Assistant News Director to lead our newsroom and drive the content, coverage and culture across platforms. You’ll work alongside reporters and the Assignment Manager to push story development beyond the obvious and sharpen newscasts in collaboration with the Executive Producer.

You must excel in digital fluency and social media to engage audiences wherever they consume news, mentor staff, and stay ahead of day-to-day demands while guiding long-term

Qualifications

• 8+ years of broadcast newsroom experience with at least 3 years in leadership.
• Strong news judgement and understanding of legal liabilities and ethics.
• Ability to manage high-pressure situations and conflicts with composure.
• Experience in a content-generating role.
• Experience in investigative journalism and belief in its community value.
• Excellent “people skills,” high emotional intelligence and solution orientation.
• Must lead by example at all times.
• On-call 24/7 to respond to staff inquiries and newsroom needs.
• Occasional schedule adjustments for weekends/evenings/mornings based on coverage needs.
• Must pass a drug test and background check.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily broadcast and digital content, coverage decisions, newsroom operations and staff.
• Drive story development, pitches, reporting priorities and script approvals.
• Ensure breaking and developing news leads our newscasts and digital platforms.
• Maintain high standards for accuracy, urgency and impactful journalism.
• Oversee newscasts with a big-picture focus on distinctive coverage.
• Coach, mentor and inspire reporters, producers and newsroom leaders.
• Partner with the Assignment Manager on daily coverage and long-term content strategy.
• Lead editorial meetings and drive newsroom priorities.
• Lead election coverage and major special projects.
• Collaborate with the News Director on promotable content and strategic planning.
• Develop and coach the news management team.
• Recruit and hire top talent.
• Build relationships across the station and foster a high-performance culture.
• Manage staff schedules and timecards.
