Job summary

Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) seeks an Assistant Engineer to operate and support the R/V Lake Guardian's propulsion and power systems from Milwaukee, WI, with a 30 days on / 30 days off rotation. The role includes maintenance, watchkeeping, and securing safety compliance while in port or at sea.

A U.S. passport and proper endorsements are required. Responsibilities include routine maintenance, logkeeping, inventory management, and cooperation with engineers, scientists, and crew.

Qualifications

• Must hold an endorsement in chief engineer (limited) or assistant engineer (limited) for steam, motor, or gas turbine-propelled vessels.
• Ability to log maintenance tasks and inventory into a ship management software.
• Ability to work collegially with scientists, resource managers, and educators.
• Must be a member, or willing to become, of the International Organization of Masters, Mates, and Pilots union.
• Must pass drug screening and background check.
• Must maintain a U.S. passport and a valid state driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor propulsion machinery and generators to ensure performance.
• Participate in planned maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting.
• Stand engine room watch and respond to alarms to maintain readiness.
• Follow safety regulations and company policies during operations.
• Manage spare parts, tools, and fuel inventory with proper records.
• Engage in emergency drills and response procedures as required.
• Document maintenance, performance, and fuel use per procedures and regs.
• Collaborate with engineers, deck officers, and crew to meet objectives.
