Job summary

Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. seeks an Assistant Engineer to support the EPA’s R/V Lake Guardian. The role involves 30 days aboard at sea followed by 30 days in port, with day rates of $674.06 underway and $486.70 in port during reduced operations.

The vessel operates roughly 150–250 days at sea annually, docking at Milwaukee when not surveying the Great Lakes. You will work under the Chief Engineer to maintain propulsion, power generation, and auxiliary systems, contributing to safe, reliable

Qualifications

• Endorsement in grades of chief engineer (limited) or assistant engineer (limited) for steam, motor and/or gas turbine-propelled vessels.
• Ability to log maintenance tasks into ship management software.
• Must be able to work collegially with scientists, resource managers and educators.
• Must be a member, or willing to become a member, of the International Organization of Masters, Mates, and Pilots union.
• Must pass a drug screening and background check.
• Must maintain a U.S. passport and a valid U.S. driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor propulsion machinery to ensure optimal performance.
• Participate in planned maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting of machinery.
• Stand engine room watch as per duty roster and respond to alarms.
• Adhere to safety procedures and international maritime regulations.
• Assist in inventory management of spare parts, tools, and fuel consumption.
• Engage in emergency drills and response procedures.
• Maintain logs of maintenance activities, equipment performance and fuel usage.
• Collaborate with engineering team and deck officers to meet operational objectives.
