Job summary

Family Farm and Home is seeking an Assistant Store Manager to lead in the absence of the Store Manager and to champion its mission of exceptional service and value. You will guide merchandising, staffing, and operations to meet budgeted goals while promoting a strong customer-focused culture.

You will oversee hiring, coaching, and performance management, maintain store morale, and drive inventory control, safety, and policy adherence.

  • Promote Family Farm and Home mission statement and family values.
  • Assist store manager in promoting an aggressive sales culture with an intense focus on superior customer service.
  • Responsible for maintaining a highly motivated team by assisting the store manager in hiring, coaching, counseling, disciplining and firing of team members; planning, monitoring, and evaluating job results.
  • Maintains professionalism and positive store morale.
  • Assist in executing and performing all store job responsibilities through key associates and/or own actions.
  • Completes store operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.
  • Provides feedback to the office, buyers, district managers and other company officials.
  • Achieves financial objectives by assisting in annual budget preparation, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, initiating corrective actions.
  • Identifies current and future customer requirements by establishing rapport with actual and potential customers.
  • Establish relationships and support local community groups consistent with company values.
  • Solicits customers to sign up for Family Farm and Home Programs (loyalty, warranties, financing, etc.).
  • Manages and protects inventory and company assets against theft and damage per company policy.
  • Verifies merchandise is received, stored and merchandised in all departments per procedures.
  • Maintains safe and clean store environment and ensures compliance with legal requirements.
  • Assists store manager in marketing strategy changes by reviewing statements and sales records.
  • Maintains consistent operations by enforcing policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned by store manager or company official.

Currently we operate 71 retail locations in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland and Pennsylvania . We cater to our customers' needs by supplying a wide variety of products in departments such as tools, hardware, automotive, pet, work and casual clothing, footwear, farm supplies, horse and livestock feed, bird food, lawn and garden, and alternative heating.

The primary responsibility of the assistant store manager position is to manage the store in absence of the store manager. The assistant store manager must exemplify the company’s culture by consistently supporting and strengthening the basic philosophies of the company. Being an assistant store manager requires strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and supervise team members. The assistant store manager will have expertise in company culture, merchandising, shrink control and operational aspects of the store. A successful assistant store manager will be knowledgeable of the local market, customer base, seasonality opportunities, competitors and other specifics of the local market that may influence the business. The assistant store manager is a role model, a leader, problem-solver, and strategic thinker, who can manage her/his time to achieve budgeted goals. An assistant store manager will help the store manager drive sales and profits through merchandising, inventory management, expense control, human resource management and controlling operating costs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities, Include but are not limited to:

  • Protects team members and customers while maintaining the stability and reputation of the store by complying with legal requirements and providing a safe and clean store environment.
  • Assists store manager in determining marketing strategy changes by reviewing operating and financial statements and departmental sales records.
  • Assists store manager in maintaining consistent operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing, operational and personnel policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned by store manager or company official.
Assistant Store Manager Requirements:
A successful assistant store manager must demonstrate excellent leadership and problem solving skills. They will be able to manage with limited supervision. Assistant store managers will need to have good oral/written communication skills in order to effectively interact with customers, vendors and other associates. A successful assistant store manager must understand aggressive customer service and be team-oriented. They must have good management and organizational skills. Additionally, they must be able to understand and interpret data presented in statistical or numerical form and be able to use it effectively in assessing and coordinating the merchandise and operational aspects of store operations in the absence of the store manager. They need be detail oriented and able to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. Assistant store managers must be able to stand for extended periods of time. They are able to move and handle boxes of merchandise and fixtures throughout the store. They must be able to climb up and down ladders, reach, bend, twist, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs. Finally, they must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
