Job summary

The New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) is seeking a Full-Time Museum Facilities Maintainer in Corona, NY. Under supervision, you will inspect, maintain, and repair museum buildings and equipment, performing a range of duties from electrical work to basic carpentry.

This on-site role supports critical facility operations and safety for visitors and staff. Qualifications include a high school diploma, a NYS driver’s license, and at least one year in building maintenance.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under general supervision, assist with the performance of highly responsible work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of museum buildings, equipment, and facilities; as well as performing related work.

Example of Typical Tasks

  • Assists with the performance of responsible general maintenance work or specialized work regarding electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, glazing, stonework, woodworking, shop work, metalwork, and automotive repairs.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Visually inspect buildings, structures, equipment, and vehicles to identify defects, malfunctions, and hazardous conditions.
  • Assist in performing routine maintenance on buildings, machinery, equipment, appliances, furniture, and facility systems.
  • Help diagnose and repair cosmetic, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues.
  • Assist with the Installation, adjustment, and testing of new machinery or equipment as required.
  • Construct exhibit structures, backgrounds, and mountings.
  • May perform responsible work in reproducing museum publications; or may lay out, construct, paint, and letter signs, markers, and directional indicators.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repairs.
  • Help to determine parts and materials needed to repair pending job orders and coordinate with vendors and suppliers for ordering as directed
  • Maintain detailed records of work and assist in generating reports of repairs, inspections, inventories, and maintenance activities.
  • Work alongside the Museum Maintainers, Supervising Museum Maintainer, and Director of Facilities to ensure maintenance tasks are completed efficiently and effectively, and comply with safety standards and company policies.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety regulations.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school graduation or high school equivalency required
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License is required
  • One (1) year of experience in building construction, facility maintenance, or related fields.
  • Must be mechanically inclined, with basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and general facility maintenance systems, and the ability to operate all maintenance equipment under general supervision, such as hand tools, bench tools, ladders, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment efficiently
  • Familiarity with preventative maintenance programs and maintenance tracking systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Able to use and/or be exposed to standard maintenance materials and commercial cleaning products
  • Knowledge of safe practices in accordance with OSHA standards- wearing proper protective eyewear, gloves, earplugs, and utilizing fall arrest & headgear when appropriate, etc.
  • Ability to comprehend & apply safety procedures as they relate to Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Must be detail–oriented and able to follow oral and written instructions
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lift , pull, push, and carry 50 lbs
  • Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, crawl, and climb
  • Ability to work in varied physical environments, including outdoor, confined, and at-height settings.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Technical or vocational training, or degree in relevant field preferred
  • Existing FDNY Certificate of Fitness holders preferred
    • F1 - Fire Guard for impairment
    • F3 - Fire Guard for Indoor Places of Assembly
    • F4 - Fire Guard for Temporary Places of Assembly
    • G-22 Use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas or Compressed Natural Gas
    • S95 - Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems
  • OSHA 10/30 Certification preferred
  • Fork truck and/or aerial lift certification preferred
  • Bilingual Candidate preferred (English/Spanish)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Mobility: Must be able to move about the building to perform cleaning tasks, including standing, walking, and climbing stairs for extended periods
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds, such as trash bags, cleaning supplies, and equipment
  • Manual Dexterity: Must be able to use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls, including operating cleaning machinery and equipment
  • Reaching and Bending: Must be able to reach overhead and bend down to clean high and low areas, including windows, floors, and furniture
