Montville Township Public Library in New Jersey seeks an innovative, community-minded leader for the Assistant Library Director role. This senior manager oversees daily operations, staff supervision, and acts in the Director's absence.

The Montville Township Public Library, located in northern Morris County with convenient access to I-80 and I-287, seeks an innovative, creative, and community-minded professional to join our leadership team. The Library serves a growing suburban community of approximately 22,450 residents.
The Assistant Library Director plays a key role in the administration and development of the Library, overseeing daily operations, supervising and coaching staff, and assuming responsibility for the Library in the Director’s absence, including working with the Board of Trustees and Township officials.
As Head of Programs & Services, this position provides leadership for public services, programming, community outreach, and collection development. The Assistant Director will oversee Children’s and Young Adult collection development budgets and help plan and manage the Library’s large-scale cultural, educational, and family events.
The Assistant Director will also take a leading role in marketing, public relations, communications, and community engagement, developing strategies to increase awareness and use of Library services. The position will work closely with the Director, staff, Board, and community partners on strategic planning and implementation, including the Library’s upcoming 2027 strategic planning process. Grant writing and fundraising support are also part of the position.
The successful candidate will be an excellent writer and communicator with strong management skills, creativity, initiative, and a genuine commitment to excellent library service. Experience in marketing/PR, strategic planning, programming, community outreach, grant writing, or event management is highly desirable.
Qualifications: MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution and ability to obtain a New Jersey Professional Librarian Certification. A minimum of four years of post‑MLS/MLIS professional experience, including demonstrated management or administrative experience, is required.
This is an exempt, 40‑hour‑per‑week position with weekday, evening, and weekend hours. The Montville Township Public Library is covered under Civil Service. This position offers a starting salary of $80,000. All employees participate in the NJ PERS pension plan.
