Job description

The school librarian provides instructional leadership for teaching information literacy skills, develops and maintains a school library collection with up-to-date digital and print materials, and manages the library as a flexible, multi-tasked learning environment. Collaborates with faculty and administrators to support the instructional curriculum.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Teach skills related to locating, accessing, evaluating, using, and communicating information to students and teachers.
  2. Maintain the library’s print, non-print, and electronic collections; manage circulation of materials and equipment.
  3. Collaborate with teachers to plan assignments that develop digital learning, participatory learning, inquiry skills, and information literacy.
  4. Perform collection development by selecting, ordering, and updating library resources.
  5. Introduce new instructional materials and technologies to staff.
  6. Supervise library assistants and volunteers as needed.
  7. Plan and execute special projects to enhance literacy through reading initiatives.
  8. Assist in preparing the school library budget.
  9. Commit to ongoing professional development.
  10. Assess student learning and adapt instruction accordingly.
  11. Use district curriculum and National School Library Standards to plan daily activities.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Budgetary Responsibility: Assist in developing the library’s spending plan based on resource needs.

Report Preparation: Generate circulation and budget reports; prepare reports for administration.

Equipment Operation: Operate and instruct others in the use of computer and electronic equipment.

Contacts: Interact with librarians, faculty, staff, students, parents, community leaders, and other librarians.

Work Direction & Supervision: May supervise library assistants and provide work direction.

Decision Making: Exercise independent decision-making within areas of responsibility; supervisor approval needed for broader decisions.

Physical Demands: Regular use of hands, fingers, and arms; standing, walking, bending, sitting; some lifting required. Moderate noise level; potential exposure to dust and mold.

Qualifications: Knowledge of teaching and learning concepts, instructional goals development, collection management, budgeting, and collaboration skills. Ability to make decisions, analyze problems, resolve conflicts, and plan effectively.

Requirements: Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Library Media or eligibility. Successful completion of FBI, State Police, CPS investigations, tuberculosis screening.
