JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for the delivery of intervention strategies, behavioral protocols, social skills instruction and techniques for students exhibiting a variety of disruptive, challenging, and/or aggressive behaviors within the elementary schools setting, who are referred to the Learning Labs for these supports. Work involves implementing and using behavioral intervention techniques to de-escalate, monitor, and control disruptive behaviors, utilizing behavior management techniques, and teaching social skills replacement behaviors in order to assist students to perform successfully in school. Work assignments are performed within the Learning Lab when students are not able to remain in the classroom and/or non-classroom settings due to disruptive behavior; the goal is to return students to their classrooms once the behavior has been addressed and manageable again.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works directly with students in small groups and individually to implement instructional programs, plans and activities for students who are disruptive to the educational environment.
  • Teaches social skills for replacement behaviors that contribute to disruptive, challenging behaviors.
  • Monitors students’ behaviors as they return to the classroom through follow up with the referring teachers to provide feedback and suggestions for successful functioning in school/classroom.
  • Participates in training of school staff on supporting Behavioral Intervention Plans for students that access the Learning Lab.
  • Implements Skill streaming: The Elementary Student, and Second Step in the Learning Labs. Keeps daily records and logs for students in the Learning Labs.Completes daily data collection and uses the data for decision making for students referred to the Learning Lab.
  • Assists students with development of classroom reentry plans following time spent in the Learning Lab for de-escalation.
  • If student is having difficulty settling down, uses verbal intervention techniques to help the student de-escalate, and if necessary and as a last resort uses non-violent physical crisis intervention (CPI).
  • Assists in the re-establishment of relations between the students and referring teacher, mediating, and resolving issues or difficulties to create a cohesive learning environment in which every student participates and feels comfortable.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • Number of College Credit Hours (if applicable) 48 college credit hours including course work in human development, child psychology, counseling, special education, or related field preferred; or
  • Associate's Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university preferred;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.

  • Willingness to learn and implement instructional methods, strategies, and techniques to assist students.

  • Ability to establish effective and cooperative working relations with professional and support staff.
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Hold or be eligible for Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification issued by AACPS/Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) preferred; or
  • Hold or be eligible for Registered Behavior Technician(RBT) Certification issued by Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc preferred.

CAREER LADDER REQUIREMENTS

Qualification Requirements for Employment in Higher Grade as a New Hire or Transfer requires:

  • Two (2) additional years successful experience required.
  • Achievement of Registered Behavior Technician Certification or Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification required.

Eligibility for Consideration for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:

  • Two (2) years continuous successful experience in the position at the Lower Grade level.
  • Mastery of all responsibilities and duties of the position.
  • Evidence of completion of additional training that may be recommended by supervisor and/or participation in approved professional development programs or courses, approved in advance by the supervisor. Successful completion of a minimum of one professional development within the last two years is required. Successful completion of job specific professional developments identified on the job description, performance evaluations and/or the supervisor’s documented recommendation are required.
  • Achievement of identified goals as they relate to the needs of the district and as established by the supervisor.
  • Consistent maintenance of an effective and orderly work environment.
  • Consistent compliance with general office procedures such as standards contained in the AACPS Employee Handbook; demonstration of discretion and excellent customer service; regular and punctual attendance; and building dress code, including wearing AACPS ID badge.
  • Above Satisfactory overall job performance for the two most recent consecutive years of Performance Ratings.
  • Letter of Recommendation written by the supervisor.

Additional Requirements for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:

  • Achievement of Registered Behavior Technician Certification or Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification required.
